Does or did anyone make these cars? I see one on ebay now and it says athearn as the manufacturer, but it looks scratchbuilt. If they were produced how hard are they to find?
Walthers made them in HO scale a while back, I have one.
Walthers made them, Railroads did too. They'd be made from whatever "scrap car" was available.
Depends on if you have the skills to scratchbuild one. As Josh said, scale cars tend to be made from whatever end-of-service cars railroads have lying around. Just do a seach on Google of "scale test car" and you'll find almost any kind of equipment imaginable. If you want a purpose built scale test car like the Walthers model, $26 is a fair price for the assembled kit.
ok, so then i didn't pay to much. i was doing ok till someone started to outbid me and drove the price up to what i won it for $26.02
didn't want to start another thread about this. did any company manufacture flanger's?
There are a bunch of companies, including Banta and Rio Grande Models that make flangers although mostly for narrow gauge. They are easily adapted to standard gauge. There were several runs of flangers made by Overland brass if you want to spend the big money.
A flanger is a great kitbashing project though because there are a lot of parts available and it all starts with a flat car and some determination.

flat car huh. i had thought maybe a bay window caboose and just split the body in half and narrow it out.
i've seen the banta and rio grand models on ebay but like you said they're for narrow guage. i didn't know you could conver to standard ho. is it hard or is it just put on ho trucks and your ready to go?
as for the overland ones. I've yet to see one of those, they do have a jordan spreader im in love with and if that $600 from the feds comes soon i will get it!!
