Bridge abutments were made from stone or masonry as far as I can determine from at least the turn of the century. There were timber abutments used .. I found reference to such in "
An elementary course of civil engineering: for the use of cadets of the United States Military Academy" - 1871.
I'm speaking of larger bridges there. For smaller spans ... see this link . .
Timber Abutments
Example from that link:
"The Timber-Sill abutment should not be more then 3-feet high. It can be used to support spans up to 25-feet long."
The Timber-bent abutment .. not to exceed 6 ft in height and can be used w/spans up to 30 ft
.. there is more on a Timber-pile abutment which can be up to 10 ft high
