Our model railroad club being pure DCC I found even after adding decoders to several of my brass steam locomotives they tended to stall on even our powered turnouts.
Found the solution in using Tomar track shoes which have been around for years,they improve electrical pick up ten fold so thought I'd mention them If your have trouble with stalling whether using DC or DCC I highly recommend them,inexpensive and fairly simple to install you'll be pleased with the
resulting improvement.
Below are pictures of my installation on locomotive and tender of a older PFM 2-10-2.
Also note they are almost invisible and with a light coat of grimy black paint will become even more so.
