Well, howdy there internet peeps, and those with or without opinions

It's Troy again.

I'm hoping it's a good sign that my sciatica pain is moving up out of my calf. We're back to my hip aching. I suspect the Teeter table and some exercises are behind it.

The teeter table is currently blocking access to the train layout on the side I need to work on. As I said in a much earlier post, I don't have room for both it and the treadmill.

I need to get the teeter moved, take a few photos of the treadmill, and post it for sale. The three or four times I use it each year are not enough to justify its footprint in the crowded basement.

When it comes to respecting opinions, let me offer the following:

Somewhere after Clinton was elected, a friend turned me onto a radio host whose name rhymes with Lush Rimbaugh. I listened to him (and some chap whose name rhymes with Blenn Gleck) for over 20 years. So when that movement that sounds like the Pea Tarty started in 2009, I was all in, and got myself into two governing boards for the state groups here in Indiana. And on a statewide campaign for US Senate.

During those, as a non-religious conservative, I watched fellow conservatives embrace a lot of ... well... crap. They claimed to LOVE and SUPPORT our constitution. But the dreck they were consuming from talk radio, and talking heads on TV wasn't informed.

I fancied myself as the "Jeffersonian Conscience of the Indiana Pea Tarty" and told a future VP that when he came to "Listen" behind closed doors to what the Pea Tarty folks wanted him to do if he ran for Governor of IN.

About that time, a fellow named David Barton - a self-proclaimed "Historian" on the right came out with a book called "The Jefferson Lies" about... yep, my man old TJ himself. I'd made TJ a study point for myself over the past few years, and was slowly wrestling with the dichotomy of TJ the author of the "all men are created equal and are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights...." and the stark reality that the same author owned other men and women, and sold and purchased slaves as needed for the rest of his life.

Barton tried to sweep all of that under the Monticello rug. In fact, he didn't write a history book. He wrote Soviet style propaganda. His book was roundly debunked by historians - real ones, with degrees, teaching credentials, books of their own - on both sides of the aisle. The publisher (Thomas Mercer) eventually pulled the book citing errors by the author. Barton had to purchase remaining inventory, then made a few changes to move from "statement of fact" to "opinion" on a few of his more outrageous ascertations. And he republished the book under his own Wallbuilders business entity. But the damage to what was left of his reputation was done.

Much of the right's grasp of history is rooted in David Barton's pseudo-history. And my bookshelf groans under the weight of books debunking Barton's works.

That is why I stopped calling myself "conservative" and started looking beyond the spin chambers on only one side of the opinion gulf.

Why do I bring all of this up?

Because I want to respect all INFORMED opinions.

Feed me David Barton levels of Bull-Cookies and my respect wanes. There is plenty of room for differing opinions on the political front. Or the religious front. Some of my most interesting religious discussions have been with friends who are true believers in XYZ religions, because we're able to offer the respect for the other's opinions. Why? Because it's always a discussion open to changing one's opinion.

A few years ago, Bill Nye the Science Guy debated the owner of the Big Arc in Kentucky about Evolution. The closing question was along the lines of "What would change your mind about your current position?"

Bill said ~ Evidence. Science is all about building theory based on available evidence.
The Arc Guy said ~ nothing. I have a book that tells me all I need to know.

I respect Bill's opinion. I respect Arc Guy's right to his opinion, but I don't believe it to be well informed. And he told the world his mind was closed, and not open.

I hope this makes sense.
An awful lot of informed opinions to get through Troy. Golf is much easier. You have to figure out how to get a ball in a hole 400 yards away. And there's a USGA rule that says no one except your caddie can help you figure it out.

How I'd play golf...

Hit the ball, chase the ball
hit the ball, chase the ball
Hit the ball, lose the ball
Get another ball.

Good morning. It's sunny and 72.
Yesterday, I sold my truck. It had a lot of miles on it, and was not healthy. I posted nothing about it online, nor did I perform any searches related to it.
This morning, I'm seeing all kinds of ads for trucks for sale. No, I didn't provide the buyer with my email address or phone number. I "did" have my smart phone on me while I was in the process of making the sale. Scary stuff...

Good Morning All. Clear and 74°, a little cooler today at 94°. Cold front tonight and a high of just 80° tomorrow and the rain is still in the forecast, however the chance has dropped to 53%. So basically it either is or isn't going to rain!

I did some odd jobs around the house before I jumped back into chainsaw action yesterday morning. Moderate breeze and some clouds made it a bit more tolerable. So, I did more than I should have. My usual 45 minutes stretched into an hour and I really felt it afterwards. I couldn't resist the Tylenol after lunch. I cut more than could fit in my cart, so there is still some firewood left to pick up. I'm really glad that I didn't close down the pool after the cool Labor Day week.
The cart needs to be emptied after church this morning and then it is time once again to wash the bed linens. Depending on the weather, I am not sure when I will cut some more. Not today though.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I ran more trains, swapping about 2 dozen cars from the lower to upper level; and mixing up various containers in well cars. It gives the intermodal trains a different look. I have 64 well cars divided into 4 trains, 2 on each level that are used only to provide run-through traffic either when holding locals on sidings or just running end to end when the mood hits me. I also exchanged some motive power on the run-through unit and intermodal trains. The locals get different power whenever I run them. That varies between CF7's, GP35's and GP50's. I would love to see ScaleTrains come out with a CF7. Even though they were only used by ATSF initially, there were 233 of them and many were later sold to short lines.
From the archives, how about another look at the Cigar Store in Maultown with the ladies who live (and work) on the third floor.

David - OK, I had to look up a Yorkshire Curd Tart. Just not my type of snack. But I don't drink tea either.
Chris - There are a couple of really large Lego train layouts at a model railroad museum that I visit in Gulfport Mississippi. I have posted pictures, but I never made any videos. Interesting stuff but not for me to invest in.
Terry -
Scary stuff...
I've had similar stuff happen when my wife makes Amazon purchases. Ads for the same stuff appear on my phone!

For you rockers out there, Joan Jett is 66 today.
Everyone have a wonderful and safe Sunday.

It does make sense. Not for nothing, every book written contains the author's prejudices, and reflects their "world view'. That includes their interpretation of historical fact, economic data, or religious dogma.

Years ago, my mother, a very staunch Roman Catholic and politically a socialist, who was a registered Republican voter, listened to a very "conservative, fundamentalist, evangelical" Presbyterian Minister - Church Pastor - and Real Estate Speculator and Catholic critic. This guy disliked John Kennedy, and ranted and raged about his every "sin'. When I finally got up the courage to question her as to why she listened to this obviously opinionated person who was of the exact opposite viewpoint of my mother, she couldn't answer me beyond that he was on the radio station she always listened to. If she tuned this guy out, she may find a station she liked better, but she felt obligated because she went to school with the station owner. 😕

I was and am to this day baffled by this obvious conflict in opinions, but it was her reality. Every person has their own personality. When I was with Amtrak, I encountered numerous men and women who I worked with everyday...some were similar to me in thought and belief, others were diametrically opposite. Others were somewhere in the middle. The workplace was diverse, in all matters, and we all learned to work together for our common goal, the pay check. Mostly everyone was tolerant of the other.
You do you, and I'll do me. There was little "fact checking" or "my way or the highway ".

Today's political atmosphere is totalitarian. No matter what it is, someone will dislike you and cancel you disagreeing with them.
Maybe this will pass moderator scrutiny, maybe not. But, it is what it is.

Many years ago, way back in the past I read (somewhere that escapes me) the following.
It is not History that changed History, but Historians and so-called Historians.

I did not fully understand until the Falklands War in 1982. During one particular raid by British aircraft on the Argentinians a reporter said,
"I counted them all out, and I counted them all back."
Off course we the listeners believed him. Later we found out he could not count. One aircraft did not return.

Since then, what is said often contradict to what really happened.

Listen to the report of a sports game you have just attended. At times you doubt you were really there.

Good morning, all! Well, the feels like is 101 at 10:30 AM. This is driven by the humidity. Today is the Conductress's birthday, so I'm not sure what the day holds. I have offered to cook dinner, but she wants tacos from a new place a few miles away.

Opinions - Like _ _ _ _ _ _ _ s everyone has one.

Troy - I think you are safe from Popeye. He only eats spinach from crushable cans, where the lid pops off under pressure. In my opinion, Popeye owns Bluto.

Trains - I did run a few yesterday. Some on the main lines and the switcher gathered up the remaining empties. I had one turnout, a critical one at that, derail trains. Turned out to be a piece of ballast. Vacuumed, and all is well.

Good noon gentlemen, sunny and warm Sunday, had this "wasp eater" move near my deck door. Not sure what kind of spider it is, but all the black jackets seemed to disappear after several days with his presence. This thing was easily 2 inches spread out.

Anyway it moved too close to my deck door and I didn't want to risk kissing it in the dark on my way out early to go to work. So I gently moved it below my deck. On the train front:

The 1 gauge Kriegslocomotive Ty2 project is slowly coming along.
