Good morning all!

Another beautiful Northern Illinois day. A little warmer today with a high of 85. I see Saturday is only going to be 64 for a high, with a 40 degree low. I guess its time to dig the snow blower out and get it ready.

Not much else going on today. Some light laundry.

Have a safe day everyone!

I am 80 and my wife is 73. We live in NW Indiana and are getting around to planning our final countdown. Our situation is a little different. My wife's family lives in Arkansas and we have bought a plot for the 2 of us next to her family. We are going to be cremated here and taken to Arkansas one way or the other. Nothing fancy, just turn on the grill, slap my dead ass on it and sweep up the ashes. No final words, no nothing. I guess I will need an attorney to notify our executor (who lives in Texas) to profile our terms. I also want to disinherit a few deadbeat relatives.

speaking of final arrangements, we're into the getting a gathering place for our family post graveside services.

so we're trying to figure out if the church ladies will be able to prepare food, or should we pay for deli meat and veggie trays?

Funerals aren't for the deceased, they're for the living, to honor the memory of their loved one. That's why we'll get to listen to "When the Saints Go Marching In" - Mom's favorite "hymn" or whatever kind of song it is. I did debate getting a bagpiper to play it graveside. My way to tweak Mom. Fine, I'll play your song, but it's going to be done by some strangled cats. ;)

Tried those. Looks like this is a case of bulging disk, and not arthritis related. Going to take a while to heal up.
In a similar situation, I find relief by laying flat on my back on a hard surface...no pillow. I have been using that technique since I was in my mid 20s. Something like Naproxen (Advil) to relieve inflammation may also help. Also stretches like Ken mentioned.

That wont take long in a grocery store!
No it does not. Too bad the $231 perscription $ cannot be used in the gas total!

I was wrong for each 50 spent you get $.25 per gallon today. We got $.75 per gallon today. We are at $2.90 off per gallon and I have about 1 gallon or 48 mile range left in the car so at $3.29 per gallon at the pump I’ll need to fork out some on the next fill up.

I see the Kroger CEO said management payroll and bonus are not what’s causing the higher costs of groceries. It’s the supposed high cost of fuel, staff and CREDIT CARD FEES. When he was asked about the record billions in profit Kroger and grocery stores in general are experiencing his response was. When you can run a lean and eager work force you will make money.

I'd like to point out that basic econ 101 will explain "high profits" in times of inflation. Inflation is not caused by random price increases out of the blue. Those price increases are not sustainable as your competitors will lower prices to grab business.

When you have true inflation, which is caused by n expabsion of the money supply greater than the expansion of the available goods and servces and demand for such. And in the US we hadsuch an expansion. I may be slightly off as this is from memory but from 2020-2022/23 there was a 27% expansion in the money supply, but there was not an expansion in demand and supply to justify it. When a business's costs go up due to inflation causing their prices they pay for goods to sell or parts to build new products, the consumer prices will go up.

Most companies price by margin. They price at 30% markup (or whatever number) off of the cost. So if the cost goes up, 30% of that cost will be a higher number. Hence the "illusion" of higher profits. They make the same percentage of costs as proft (in simple terms) and costs have gone up so the value of the percentage has also gone up. However, those increased profits are in reality an illusion on paper because the profits are composed of inflated dollars. The profits number on paper may be higher but the worth of that profit is not higher since each dollar is worth less. So the value of the profits is not record breaking. Just the inflated dollar amount.

I have several friends who run businesses. Their costs for goods or parts to make goods have definitely gone up. There is not a worldwide conspiracy to jack up prices that every business is involved in, which would haveto be the case if the claims that companies price gouging were the reason for the inflation.

You doin this today?

There are a group of politicians who equate large profits with price-gouging. Those politicians don't understand simple economics. But in a similar note to what Chad tried to explain, let me put it more simply. If your net profit on groceries is 2%, that is x times 1.02, where x equals your total costs; cost of goods, labor, transportation, utilities and other factors. So if inflation causes those costs to go up 10%, x is now x times 1.10; therefore profits are now x times 1.12 based on the original pre-inflation cost. So yes, the grocers (Kroger, Publix, Walmart etc) are making more money but the profit margin is still the same! They're spending more to acquire those goods. Those profits seem greater and are record setting because inflation drove them higher, not because of price-gouging. I am not naive enough to not realize that there may be a little gouging going on, but as Chad pointed out, your competitors will lower their prices and beat you at that game.

Good evening, all! On the weather front, two lows in the Gulf appear to be merging. This is predicted move south and then return next week. We had a rainy and cloudy day. I had to go to the dermatologist this morning has a result of 2 biopsies. Scraped and cauterized, she said there is a 96% cure rate. When I returned, I went to the train room and planted Cooley's.

STAY SAFE
LATER

Well howdy there internet peeps, and those who enjoy (Good) Bagpipe music. That includes me. If it's just loud, then it's cat strangulation.

It's Troy again.

I stopped shopping at Kroger (except for a couple of items that are never stocked in other stores. I purchased three different items (multiples of each) there today, so I don't have to return until next month. We used to spend $400/mo there. Now other stores are getting the business, with a better rewards program than Kroger gives. Supply and demand, collide with business integrity.

Tonight, Amazon driver failed. This package was supposed to be delivered yesterday. When I went to "bed" in my recliner, it was still MIA. Got the notice about half an hour ago, it had been delivered.

Yes, similar instructions are on my Amazon delivery instruction profile. But, I've learned drivers don't always read the instructions, so I made it easy for them. Or so I thought. I'd at least give him/her a point if they'd open the gate and set it inside. Doesn't have to get to the porch. But out there, the porch pirates will see it.

And, what's so darned important?

MeatR.jpg

My new Meater Block! Four probes with bluetooth transmission. I can cook multiple steaks to differing degrees of doneness, or multiple points on a brisket, etc.

Meater just announced a new version of the Block, so their old ones are about $50 off right now.

As for the family, post funeral meal, looks like I'm cooking pulled pork for it. It will be held at my sister's church. Sis warned me that the few "church ladies" who do funeral meals are better at Jello-mold Salads, than actual meal planning. That's the problem when your church body keeps having disagreements, and half of the parishioners keep taking their their balls and playing in their own yards.

So, we'll do it ourselves, and let the church ladies reheat the pulled pork, and drop stuff into the ovens at a set temp, for a set time.

And if that gets screwed up, we're having an ice-cream bar because that's the granddaughters say Grandma would want. When you're sad/lonely/mad/happy etc, ice cream is a good idea. I'll even make sure we have sprinkles.

Amazon delivery in our area is handled by a third-party contractor. It's rare that I see the same driver more than twice, and it's real obvious that they don't read the delivery instructions on my customer profile. One driver{s} consistently delivers to the front door even though our instructions clearly state back door. No fences or dogs to deal with, it's just that we rarely use the front door. Another driver always leaves packages on the planter by the back porch, at least that's close. I asked another driver whether he reads the delivery instructions and his response was "No, I deliver to the first door that I see when I get out of the van". I have left negative feedback many times to no avail. I'm not sure any of their drivers lasts long enough to be disciplined! Sign on the front door didn't help either. I once received a package delivery confirmation photo that included the sign (with a big red arrow) in the picture with the package.
