The Texas Roadhouse here is extremely loud and the food id so-so.
Curt: Most of the one's I have been to, match your description. But hungry is hungry.... Most were also near Camp LeJeune, NAS Pensacola, Ft. Stewart, Ft. Campbell, and Hunter AAF. Still better than Logan's Roadhouse, or Applebee's. Last Good Steakhouse, was Ruth Chris.

Glad you resolved the tech issue...not that far along, may need a consult in the future.

Good evening Shop Dwellers!

Thank you all for the "likes" and comments: Tom-C51, George, Louis, Guy, Gary, Dave, Patrick, Troy, James, TomO, Smudge, Hughie, Joe

. . .
IBKen: I had a devil of a time loading JMRI on this WIN11 laptop. Windows "security" kept blocking the download as "incompatible". Finally got it loaded, and have gotten no further, because I don't have the program track wired yet. Since I never used it before, I won't have to worry about data on a previous version, but I was surprised how difficult it was to do something simple, like download and install.
Joe - I wonder if that might be because they are now using GitHub as their download platform, rather than their original service? I know that v5.0 and later requires Java 11 rather than the more common Java 8 runtime engine; I had to pre-install Java 11 first. Not as straightforward as previous JMRI installs.

At that price, I assume is was made of gold and precious stones. :D
Smudge - since Eric Brooman's Utah Belt has achieved legendary status, anything that ran on his layout is gonna fetch top dollar.

Curt - Looks like your layout is at - or beyond - the point where your previous layout was at when you had to demolish it! I'm really glad the floodwaters didn't reach your house. Do you have any idea how close you were to being flooded?

Had a full work day today, so not much time in the trainroom. But at least I made good use of the little bit of time I did have: I relocated the train cabinet to a spot that is not directly behind where I sit at the workbench, so I can more easily reach the cars from the aisle without having to roll the workbench out of the way. I placed a pair of dollies with tool boxes on them in the cabinet's original spot, since that will let me just lean back in my chair and grab whatever tool I need...as close to an ergonomic arrangement as I could get.

The frontal system that has been stalled above the Northeast has kept a continuous parade of drizzling clouds over my property since Friday night, but I'm not complaining - my area has been needing some good soaking rain for months now. But I feel sorry for the folks who are stuck beneath the heavy downpours closer to the ocean.

This persistently wet weather pattern may convince me to finally unpack, and set up, the portable spray booth that I ordered from Micro-Mark ~ a year ago since it was on sale for 30% off. It's been sitting in a box in my laundry room ever since I received it.

Good Night - and have a Pleasant Tomorrow!

Todd: It is, if you let it. My view based on experience, is Keep Moving, and Stay Active. I was doing well until we were locked down for Covid. Once the inertia of not doing anything took hold, it became a pandemic in itself. Don't know what y'all are planning, just get out and keep moving. Best wishes.
Boris, it wasn't me ( or us ) I aimed that comment at. I got enough to do that I can't move on to a different life. Thanks for the wishes!

I ordered 12 pieces of Micro Engineering Track and some rail joiners. $103.00 that includes $18.50 shipping.
George
George: Damn that stuff's at a premium right now. Great track though.

Yeah, when I came across the other posts, I noticed that the comments were directed at others...no big deal, the comments are applied to them.

Although it sometimes seems like I never get off of here, Mel does kick me out...I don't tip much, and Flo complains...and yesterday, there were like five pages of unread posts.

Five pages of unread posts…….faints…..

Mel just likes man handling you….lol

…and flo bless her, she is saving for a world round trip, they are not cheap you know……

Good morning y'all: 46° and still raining. 0.37" since midnight, Total rainfall since last Saturday, not county today, 4.82". Initial forecast was for significantly less than this. However, we can always use the rain, it was mostly a soaking rain, rather than torrential downpours.

Jaz: ;) world round trip? Reminded me that back more years than I care to remember Pan American Airlines was marketing Flight #2, a scheduled 747 that flew around the world. I always thought that would be cool. Never quite got around to it, even though back then I could have afforded it. Pan Am, been long out of business, and even the railroad that acquired rights to the name and logo, is gone, absorbed by CSX. Still think that would have been fun. My sons have both traveled almost around the world, but not quite. The void between Afghanistan and one of Austrailia or South Korea has not been covered. We had a neighbor, about 30 years ago, a Brit family, who bought the house next to us. They moved from Hong Kong. They were here two or three years, during which the fellow spent 90% of his time traveling as part of his job. Never mentioned what he did, and I didn't ask. Very nice family, I believe they relocated to the UK. Their son was my son's age..and he taught my son how to play Soccer.

Jaz: The reason Mel probably kicked me out, was that I was sitting there drinking a Tim Horton's medium coffee, and complained about his stale bagels.

Today, we are going for our "enhanced C-19 Boosters" and our Annual flu shots...one in each arm...this might not be a good idea after all. Yesterday, I went to the knee surgeon. Looking at January for the right knee replacement. Got a shot of cortisone, for the interim. The ankles, were x-rayed...found not damaged. Diagnosis, fallen arches...have an appointment with Podiatrist for later in month. Cancelled therapy, pending next visit with spine specialist.. that's on the 20th. The Sciatica flare-up is showing signs of letting up a bit, as long as I do stretches, use a heating pad and avoid sleeping on my back. Things are looking up. Be better when I get an injection.

Troy: Get well.

Pre-season Hockey: Devils shut out Bruins 1-0; Toronto beat the Habs, Carolina beat Columbus, Edmonton and Vancouver both won. In Baseball, the Phillies clinched a wild card berth, while Atlanta lost to Florida, and failed to clinch the NL East. The Mets were rained out. They have to win today's doubleheader and tomorrows game with Washington, while hoping Miami beats Atlanta, both today and tomorrow. Meanwhile, the Yankees won over the Texas Rangers, but Aaron Judge did not hit the HR. L Severino, meanwhile had a 7 inning no hitter going when he was pulled after the Seventh. ESPN last night showed video of a heated argument between Severino and Manager Aaron Boone, after boon pulled him, for the "good of the game". Relief pitcher Castro, pitched the 8th, allowing 2 hits and one run. S. Effross pitched the ninth for the save. This is one area, where Analytics, and the sacred 100 pitch rule, Severino had 94 at the end of the 7th. This takes the thrill and drama out of the game, and left Severino's fate to someone else...He had faced 22 batters, walking one, and striking out 7.

Good morning rail fans,

It is a mild 55° in east central Minnesota, cloudy now but headed up to 68 all the same,

Flo - I would like 2 eggs over medium and 2 buttermilk pancakes, also a side of hash browns. My mouth is already watering!

Guy - that fishing can be rough on the skin, my Grandma always wore these very wide brimmed hats, she had nice skin until she died at age 84. I think she spent as much time on the water as you and yours, she loved to fish!

Troy - appears like you picked up the bug at the convention, wonder if others were as unlucky. Hope you get over it with little pain!

James, Snowman - thanks for the tip on the injector cleaners, wow I have lots to choose from

Ken IB thanks for the BLOG description.

Curt - great job on the signals, layout looks fine!

I worked on my water feature last night, looks like it may turn out after all, posted some pics on the build thread, will put some here when its more done...

Here is SLCR 7 going over the St. Croix (still under construction)

IMG_2648.JPG

been working on this section of track as well, smoothing it out so the 4-6-0 (NP 328) doesn't have to slow down so much. The loco shown hugs the track well, but the tender needs some more weight...

more later, Dave

Good morning.

JazA great photos you show in the 2 weathering bridges threads. I know I have seen that rusted VW Bug before but how do you get the flaking rust?

Curt, IBKEN, Boris, D&J Ken, Guy, Jaz, others and of course the master of photo posting Willie. I really appreciate when you and others show photos of your processes, layouts, locomotives and rolling stock (real or modeled). I don’t care how much experience modeling one has we can alway learn. Keep showing them, the more the merrier for me!

Laid in bed this morning looking at Terry sleep. She opens her eyes and says wait till we get home! Are we men that transparent? Anyway I was waiting to tell her I have had enough of sleeping in strange beds, let’s go home today. When I told her that she chuckled and said no problem and rolled over to sleep, it was 3:35AM. Home is just over 3 hours out, actually 2 hours 41 minutes per MapQuest but we will stop in Rochelle, Il for a rest stop, a Culvers shake and maybe Railroad Park. If we do that RR Park, it’s 4 hours home because 1 train isn’t enough, 2 is a must at RR Park

enjoy the day

Well, howdy there internet peeps, and those getting their shots

It's Troy again, from the Coof-bunker 🤧 in the basement.

Symptoms are really mild so far <knocks wood>. A bit of lung pressure in the upper section. A small headache that comes and goes. A bit of nasal drip.

Reached out to the doc to see if I'm a good fit for Paxlovid. Not sure if he'll think my cold last week was actually the Coof. I tested negative Thurs and Friday. But... 🤷‍♂️

I'm anticipating the "See, shots don't work" lecture from my wife. Which is unfortunate. She's fallen into a conspiracy hole that is trying to keep the discussion about poly-tics and blame. Which is a shame. She's the one with the medical background, but immunology was her worse class in lab-tech school. It's not hard to find the info from real docs that short incubation time viruses usually start to be symptomatic even with vaxines. Our bodies might need two or three days to ramp up a solid line of defense.

Viruses like Measles and Chickenpox, and the old versions of the C19 were close to two week incubation time. Even a virus like Polio that has a 3-6 day window, has more time before the worst symptoms (paralysis begins to develop). BUT, Omy- and his Crons are in the 2-3 day window. Some symptoms, and (hopefully) some butt-kicking now awake B and T cells are colliding in my blood right now.

The good news is, she won't grump at me unless she gets sick too, or until I get a negative test. And I'm trying not to spread it to her.

Can't remember if I posted that pic. Did the masked run to TarGet yesterday. Shopped online for a cheap microwave, more Coof tests, and some candy... you know... to make sure I can still taste and smell. Gotta have some watermellon licorice for the taste test. ;) EDIT: CURBSIDE PICKUP... I STAYED IN THE CAR, THEY PUT THE STUFF IN THE TRUNK

And I've got a freezer with about two weeks of leftovers down here. Just need to head up for shower and loo visits. Mask up for those and don't stop in her areas.

Down here, I kicked on the paint booth fan that exhausts to the patio, and I'm letting it run low and slow all the time to pull upstairs air down. Covered the return air vent down here for the furnace.

Oh, and this weekend at the gaming convention, one of the games I'm building my skeletons and zombies for, had a tourney. Each army (think Lord of the Rings Fantasy setting) needed to have a "chariot" model (some armies don't have any, but they could for this event). And the gent who ran the Squirrels (aka giant Rat-men) found the perfect flying chariot.

That's why I love the gaming and model railroad hobbies. The creative license we get as modelers. The gent with this one won both best "themed" army, as well as favorite "chariot" - both as voted by the other players at the convention. Everyone appreciated the good bit of fun he was having with his army.

Trying to get my Logic Rail crossing gates working again. I blew this board the first time by unintentionally touching it with a screwdriver. I decided to place it on some plywood, hooking all the connections up, then attaching it under the layout. No twisting my head under the layout this time. The system works great but the boards are around $60.00.

Good Morning Al. Clear and 58° here on the plains of North Central Texas. No change in the weather here, 55° - 88° for the next two weeks with a slight chance of rain on the 13th. Weatherman is being optimistic there.
Speaking of optimism, Mr Dow Jones is in a good mood this week so far. May be time to move more $$$ to equities. I'm only down 40 grand in the market itself for the year so far. Could make it up in a couple of weeks if things continue which looks positive again today. Bonds and money markets are currently doing rather well for a change which has blunted the market losses. Which brings up another concern. Since retiring and moving to a self-managed retirement portfolio, I am making money faster than when I was was when working! We don't seem to be spending it as fast as I am making it. We've both been rather thrifty all of our lives and can't seem to kick that habit. I don't want to leave it to the kids, they don't need it.

I had to repair my graywater drain yesterday; it seems that some creature may have taken up residence in the pipe while we were on vacation. Never saw any while flushing it out, but got nesting materials and coagulated soap and grease remnants. I also mowed a bit around the garden since it gets irrigation water and is the only real green space I have right now. Today I will be setting up the sprinkler around parts of the house to green things up and reduce grassfire risks.

Thanks to all for the comments and likes regarding the food trailer; Tom O, Smudge, Jaz, Louis, Dave B, Hughie, George, Gary, Patrick, Curt, Tom, Rick, IB Ken, Joe.

OK Guy, this is for you. You expressed some frustration regarding roads and real estate last month, here are a few of my solutions.
I have a few full sized roads although I narrow the lanes to 8'. The illusion works.
IMG_2092.JPG

In some places,, the road is entirely off the layout and sidewalks butt up to the fascia.
IMG_2093.JPG
IMG_2096.JPG

Many lead off the layout.
IMG_2095.JPG

IMG_2097.JPG

IMG_2098.JPG

In one case, just three of the four lanes are represented.
IMG_2094.JPG

Here's another full road with 8' lanes.
IMG_2099.JPG

Oooops! Picture was taken before I added the road striping!

Troy - Get well soon. Good luck with Mom.
Todd - Your comment regarding your wife's "accomplishments" list is right on target. Completing the newest version of my model railroad in the "new train shed" was just one of mine. Improving on my track record in the garden was another. Recovering the part of the yard that got lost when I had a health issue in 2005 was another. There's many minor ones along the way. In my wife's case, she has no immediate goals except to try to fully recover from the succession of knee surgeries that she's been through. That is one reason that she's bored.
Jaz - I see that you found the period (.) key on your keyboard.;););)
You asked about Terry. He really isn't MIA, but he posted about backing off social media a bit, and while not too badly affected, he is dealing with the aftermath of the hurricane.
Your suggestion of a figure with a sombrero is well received, but isn't really realistic for one of those food trailers. In reality it would get in the way. I am leaning more to having an "on the ground" cashier with one though. That is rather common.
Dave B - You're right about the cheaper than normal steak prices, but they won't last long. The rancher who owns a lot of land across the road is thinning his herd, but not by much yet. Most of my neighbors had a good hay season, and I myself got two cuttings, so not much thinning is needed. He's cutting by just 2% and is not replenishing all of his breeders right now. He has over 5000 head of cattle, so eliminating 100 head is not going to hurt him. He wants to be ahead of the game when prices start to go back up next spring.
Regarding climate change - It's been going on for millions of years, it's only recently that it's been attributed to mankind, which is BS in my opinion.
Mike - Destructive as it was, Hurricane Ian could have been a lot worse had it veered a little either way. It missed or brushed by some significant areas like Miami, Tampa and Jacksonville. Orlando got a lot of rain but I didn't see many reports of major damage.
Your story about your friend reminds me of when I reached the legal drinking age in Texas years ago. Since the bars were open until 2:00 am, and most gave free beer on the day you reached the legal age, I went to one after midnight and drank free for two hours, then went back the next afternoon for more of the same. As a poor college student, it was a great birthday gift.

Today is National Taco Day and also National Vodka Day. And in honor of Todd, Dave (PV) and our missing friend Lee, it's also National Trucker Appreciation Day.
Everyone have a great day.

Not sure about today's stock advice, we may be seeing one of those "dead cat bounces"

I think the prophets are anticipating a fed pivot. If we see JayPo weaken to the markets, we may be trading short term joy for long term pain, IMHO.

My pension is public and I have no 401 but kinda hate all our policies made to favor the elites.

Good Afternoon All!
69F in Libby

Notice that the 2nd temp is NOT there anymo.

Safe@Home!

Found some stuff the I had forgotten I had ordered. Probably will post in the AM. Just gonna be a space cadet for now, probably will do some socializing for a couple hours too.

Later

Afternoon All,

Did my morning walk in very low 60's this morning. Did a couple of chores then headed to the train room. I determined the final placement of the signal bridge then tested all the leads to verify all the LED's were working correctly. I soldered resistors and extension wiring to the lower (2) signal heads. After that I cut the extension wires for the upper heasds (2). After lunch I started feeling light headed so I laid done and feel better now.

Thank you for all the photo likes yesterday.

Ken D&J- I am always amazed by the size of your layout.

George- Ouch! ME makes 9" sections of track. There's four per piece of flex track! 😂 Sorry. I mounted the 2 sets of electronics from LRT like you did. I look forward to seeing how it turns out since I've been thinking of putting one in on my layout.

Mike- I hope your cousin is OK.

Guy- Nice pictures. Your dog seems to have a "why am I here" expession.

Joe- I've been to Ruth Chris one time many, many years ago. I hope you continue to feel better.

IB Ken- My last layout was completed but because of the intial poor design (new modeler) I was constantly changing it. I have a open field next to my house, a retention pond behind me with a overflow ditch along side of my house and another retention pond aross the cul-de-sac from me. Although the back retention pond and ditch were full there was no overflow into my yard. The field was about 50% flooded and the other retention pond overflowed and had water actually up against the neighbors house. There are many areas locally that the water is still rising in neighborhoods (St. Johns River Watershed).

Dave- Thank you. I'll do a couple of videos when signaling is complete. Very nice scene.

TomO- I totally understand the feeling that it's time to head home.

Troy- Rocky and Bullwinkle are cool.

Willie- Nice scenes and roads. We didn't have a lot of wind damage but a lot of flooding.

I hope everyone has a good night.

As most of you know I've ordered two new motors for my DD40. I'm pleased to say they are now on their way, I'm not going to belabour this (again) in regards to postal rates, but this is what I'm being charged from this company in Chico CA to the UK.

Sub-Total:
