Good morning everyone!

What a beautiful Sunday. Abundant sunshine with temps going into the upper 70s. Another failure last night to see the Northern lights, but as I stated earlier I have always failed at seeing them.

Wife, daughter, and I are going to meet my parents at a restaurant to take my mom and wife out for Mothers day for brunch. Haven't seen my parents for a couple of weeks, so it will be good to see them and catch up.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good Wonderful Sunday Morning!
48F under a cloudless, forest-fire smoke filled sky. The suns rays can't cut through all that smoke to warm the place up.
This is all BC smoke, not Alberta. Although there is a fire burning a few miles out of town, it's being held.
A photo of the front street this very morning:

I'm not sure if you can see the smoke. There is an air-advisory in place; as if a person can do anything about it, except breathe.

This is a fine day to spend in the basement working on the layout, windows closed.

Speaking of which. I've made some advancement on the river crossing:
Bridge_05-11-2024.JPG

It's a-bit more advanced than that now, as I got up in the middle of the night to work on it.
No real plan on this, my first river crossing. I'm just carving up a storm and hoping for the best.
I was thinking a rail-served industry on the left (gravel pit, perhaps), and a campground on the right.

Willie - It really does seem like the south is getting flooded, and the north is drying up and burning! Great looking roadways!

Troy - A very nice job on the tanks.

Todd - Beautiful NS photo. I always have trouble focusing on moving trains, as well. There's always some part of it that's out of focus.

No need to celebrate Mothers Day, as my wife is not one. The ex is. My mother's been gone 30 years now.
I still need to walk the dog through the smoke. No getting away from that. It does give me the opportunity to check out the forest.
Have a wonderful day!

DRAT! I forgot to go outside and look up at 5:30 am. It was still dark out.

WILLIE: The punster in me says your boarding house REALLY needs to be next to a Savings & Loan building instead of the library. The tenants probably need the library more. But I couldn't let a good punportunity slip by. ;)

If you're into watching Baltimore Bridge happenings, check out the Minorcan Mullet channel I linked yesterday. He's doing a livestream from the site of the Dali and FSK Bridge.
Detonation of the charges is set for about 5pm Eastern Daylight time (US), but he's live now, and monitoring some of the radio traffic from the site. I'll try to be where I can watch it at 5 pm

He says he'll take a break this afternoon, then back in after camera batteries are recharged.

Morning folks

What an impressive aurora borealis last night when I took the canines for their nightly stroll at 12:30 am. When I first opened the door (which faces due south) my thoughts were those are some strange, high, wispy clouds but a look to the north left absolutely no doubt as to what was occurring with the classic green and purple extending almost over head. Unfortunately, I wasn't having much success changing the settings on the Sony A6000 to get any decent photos-something about dark, no glasses, and old----

Another cloudless morning, 41F with a forecast high of 71. There remains about 6 inches of snow but that will all be headed down valley today.

Most impressive one I've ever seen in Seattle..

Afternoon All,

Started out the day with inside and outside chores. In the train room I planted the last 15 trees that have been sitting in a pile on the layout. We went out to supper last night for Mother's Day, so nothing planned for today. On Wednesday MOH is driving up to SC to visit with her BFF and will be back next Sunday.

Todd- Great catch.

Troy- That water adventure didn't go as planned.

Bill- Great photo.

Mike- Have fun today.

Guy- For some reason I thought you lived out in the boonies. I like the uneven terrain under the bridge. It makes it more interesting. What are the bolt looking things on the left side?

Willie- Nice town area.

Bob- Both of those pictures are stunning.

Smudge- Both videos are very cool.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Morning shop dwellers!

Currently 65° degrees out and holding steady. Spring is here and may be short lived. Sorry I have not been around much but I have been busy with work and from time to time I just lurked if I had time.

I finally purchased my last Heritage unit for Union Pacific, I almost wasn't going to get it as I could not find a good deal until last night. I got this unit for 195 bucks on ebay sealed new in the box. UP 1979 We are ONE locomotive SD70M. I will post it when it comes in early next week. Shipping was 17 bucks so I did good.

I now have all of the heritage units and special schemes units except the Olympic locomotives which I do not intend to buy as they're brass. If they ever do a Athearn unit I will go for it. I would like to get an Alco 855 but that's also brass. I want to get a GE C36-7 with the 'toaster' behind the cab but none are made yet except brass. May have to find someone do a kitbash for me.

One more loco I am waiting on is the Challenger re-run by Athearn. Already have 844 and 4014 with Tsunami 2 and LEDs. I looked at BLI but I am not ready to trust them yet on functionality just yet.

So fishing is upon me and Turkey hunting as well. I will be going out this weekend for both.

Hope all is well and everyone has a good Spring! Don't forget Mother's Day is coming!

I cannot believe my eyes!

I have not bought any Rapido products except 3 steam generator cars.

I may take a leap of faith and buy 2 of these, one in MOPAC canary and one UP.....we shall see....

Trying again...

Good afternoon. It's 86 and sunny.
I finally opened the last box of spaghetti I brought with me from North Carolina. I still have a box of turkey stuffing and one of Ricearoni, and still at least a dozen cans of veggies to go through. It takes a while for a single person that doesn't like cooking for one to go through a stockpile...

edit:
My internet service currently is so bad, I had navigated here, typed and posted the above, and my post showed up in the forum I was previously viewing. That's pretty sluggish...

Curt - Nope, I'm a small town country boy. The bolts are electrician's knock-out cutters that I use for weights. Very heavy steel. They are supposed to be used for cutting holes into steel electrical cabinets for conduit entry. Left over tools from my company days.

Good Afternoon All. When it rains, it pours! Since 11:00 am when the current thunderstorm decided to drop by, I have been gifted with 3.50" of rain in my gauge. That is just over 7.5" this month, and 13.1" in the last three weeks! It's still raining, although lightly, but the yard is underwater and the pond is running over the bank again; spillway just can't let the excess out fast enough. The drainage ditches alongside the road out front are overflowing over the road, which along with the pond overflow is why my yard is not draining.

I was touched today.
My son's best friends father was killed yesterday, in a really weird, freak motorcycle accident. He was hit while working on a bush trail, by a 14yr old on a dirt bike.
My son dropped by today, just to tell me he loved me. That kinda made me appreciate the words.

Is your house and train shed safe from all that rising water?

I also have a set of Greenlee punches. Might have a need to use them once or twice a year. Won't get rid of them
because when you need them, hole saws usually won't do.

Is your house and train shed safe from all that rising water?
Short answer - Yes. I built drainage swales, berms and diversion ditches years ago. The pond overflow passes through a slight depression that runs between the train shed and the garden, which in turn drains into the ditch leading out to the roadside drainage ditches. Both the house and train shed are on elevated pads, the house about 4" higher than surrounding ground and the train shed itself is on a concrete berm 18" tall, besides also being on higher ground level by a few inches. My main issue is that the roadside ditches are not sufficient for excessive rainfall in short periods of time. The 18" pipe going under the easement road will not allow all of the water from the uphill ditch through in sufficient volume, thus backing up on my yard. The pond overflow realistically shouldn't happen, as that part of the dam is actually 14" higher than my spillway, which also drains into the roadside ditch. I need to clear debris out of it.
