We came home Sunday from almost a week in San Diego. Nicki's last living family member and our nieces live in SD and she needed some bonding time. We also spent time with our nieces. They're both in their 40's and doing quite well by CA standards. Both are in medical field. It was an expensive trip, but there ain't nothin cheap in that state.
Our nieces joined the 3 of us for a day at the SD zoo. They were kind enough to give us 50% off coupons, so it was $39 instead of $78 each. They have season passes. I hadn't been at the zoo since around 1990 and forgot how awesome it is. We spent 6 hours and still didn't see everything. It still is one of the finest zoos in the country.
We had a great meal (60 day dry aged beef) the first night. We were tired and I just drove to the first place that wasn't a chain restaurant and it was a great choice. We also had some crappy seafood at a highly rated place. The service was good, but the food was prepared by hacks.
Driving in SoCal, on the freeways, can be challenging. It's been a while since I had to drive "creatively". Our son was the navigator and he proved that GPS isn't always right. On our way back to the airport, to drop off the rental car, was proof of that. He said to go straight and I had to tell him that straight would put us into the MCRD.
"Straight" was actually 3 lanes to the left.
I have never seen the SD airport this chaotic. Arriving and departing. It was almost as bad as Heathrow. The line to get on to the rental car shuttle bus was as long as the TSA line. All because of the World Cup, SD Padres game, and LA Dodgers game. We were told that It was easier and less expensive to fly into SD instead of LA.
Overall we did have a great time, but we were so happy to be home with the dog and sleeping in our own beds.
Speaking of dog. My 93 yo mom took care of Sugar while we were gone. My mom weighs 100. Sugar weighs 115. She sent us a text half way through our trip to let us know everything was ok, but that Sugar was "an angel with horns".
