The challenges I have are I have many interests.

Cruise ship photography.
Road Haulage. (I have been around vehicles since I was knee high to a grasshopper.)
Tram Restoration.
Restoring the paddle steamer, Medway Queen.
Member of Waverley Heritage Railway.
Member of Boats & Canals Preservation Society
Member of Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Historical Society

plus helping other 'minor' (to me) societies.

All good fun. Do I really need extra freight wagons? 😅

When I was doing the walk/ride to nowhere, I found several Youtube videos of walks and bike rides along a beach in Hawaii, or a biking trail. I was able to daydream I was going somewhere.
I tried that, but I need to occupy my brain with something other than putting one foot in front of the other. I daydream a lot already. I need the distraction of someone else doing something. When I'm outside walking, I always have a podcast or audio book going for the same reason.

Morning all,

24° with a high of 30° later.

Medicare: Where to begin, fortunately, I have a year to go before I am required to sign up. Required because if you don't they penalize you for not being in their system. We are lucky that we aren't yet required to sign the wife up for part B as my insurance qualifies. Being on Medicare changes what you can and cannot do with your insurance and medical. The penalties aren't a one time and done thing.
Plan changes in our prescription plan means we are now forced to buy a part C plan for her. Cheap enough, except now we're required to pay $2000 out of pocket for 2 of her drugs. Yes one we get a lot cheaper due having 2 plans (Mine primary and her secondary). Medicare part B is $185\Month. On my wife's SS that's 20%, yes we don't pay that yet, but then add $2000 plus the cost of the supplemental prescription plan, She's not going to make it when I'm outta the picture. The $2000 deductible was my pay raise after taxes. She can't qualify for help from the manufacturer as she's got a "Medicare" plan. Now we also have to "requalify" for her one drug, that we had to tell them about before we they'd cover her. That was a CF the first time and she missed several weeks of her drug. Mine will cover at at a cost of $197 per month, (up from $25\Month), but then we then don't get to apply that to the deductible. We're at $225\month when her company pays until we reach $2000.
Now you understand why I'll have to work until at least 70.

I understand why Medicare Advantage seems so alluring, but I am aware they are not great for all. (I know someone who had a condition that Medicare covers, but the Advantage plan didn't)

Very cold here this morning in the Baltimore Maryland area.
Anyways I'll be working on the track this morning

I just posted what I did on the track design and layouts I believe that's what it's called

Anyways stay warm on these cold days good luck to those who are working on their track layouts.
If you're like me you're going to need it.

Good morning from the So Central Wisconsin. We have snow cover! Maybe a whole 2”. I just saw the city plows put most of the street snow on my driveway! It’s their job, no problem! This is the 1st day in 7 where at wake-up the real feel temperature is above 0f degrees. We are at an actual +10 and real feel of +1. The high for the day should be in the high teens but the winds will pick up.

The machine to nowhere, I truly dislike but it is a necessary evil! I watch you tube videos or occasionally will plug my iPod of tunes into some ear pods. 2-3 miles a day (morning) at about 2200 steps per mile on the machine. I have 14 steps on the stairs to the lower level, so 28 steps round trip and I will do 3 set of 3 trips in the morning and 3 in the afternoon. Plus whatever non scheduled trips up and down. My cell phone attached to me where ever it seems I go records the steps for me including on the treadmill. It also measures the elevation changes to let me record how many levels I’ve climbed.

The morning walk is done as is the 1st set of steps. Showered and ready for the day. Endocrinologist appointment at 2:30 where reading the lab reports from last week there are going to be some medicine changes. The Ozempic has greatly helped me with the glucose numbers as it was originally intended to do. It hasn’t really helped me with weight loss. But other levels in the kidney and liver are changing and that is one of the side effects of the Semaglutide drugs. This month will be 2 years on Ozempic and I need a refill for Sunday morning that I highly doubt she will refill. Should be an interesting discussion. Tonight is dinner out with Coach and his wife plus the Endocrinologist and her 1st boyfriend since her divorce 3 years ago.

Today is a train room day until the doctor’s appointment. I have divided the layout into 4 sections for cleaning and upgrades. I’m going to use Willie’s example of the way he cleans his layout. But to start I will deep clean the whole layout, I have 1 helper today and another tomorrow. After that I will put it on a quarterly schedule for cleaning. Once we have it deep cleaned I will be going back to start working on fixes and upgrades.

My upgrades will start by adding bluepoint machines on each switch. Manually thrown with an under table rod mechanism. I really like the finger flicking of switches but in practice operating sessions there have been some issues with experienced operators bumping into things. The machines I finally ordered last night! So I am committed.

Enjoy your day

Good Morning All. Clear and 27°, last morning of below freezing temperatures for the next ten days if the NWS is to be believed. Highs in the upper 50's and a couple of days in the 60's, except Sunday when rain is predicted.

I seem to be over the cold that I got last Thursday, only a few bad hours on Saturday, and just slight cold symptoms the rest of the time. I don't generally get colds and stuff, so it bums me out when they happen. Never had the flu that I can recall, and never had a flu shot either. Did have pneumonia three years ago which was a real bummer; and that was about three months after I had my first ever pneumonia vaccine. Probably won't get that one again.

Fridge is close to empty, so it must be time for the weekly grocery trek today. I skipped beer last week (have more than I have storage room for), so that's on today's list.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I tied up the final loose ends of the quarterly cleaning project. it took a little longer because there were a few days that I chose to run trains instead of doing tasks. I missed a couple of days also because I didn't want to go out there in the cold and snow.
As I posted last weekend, after spending time at the train show in Plano, I went to visit a club layout in Dallas that I really like, the Texas Northern Model Railroad Club. They have a 1700 sq ft HO layout and a much smaller 80 sq ft N scale layout in their building. The N scale one is really just an afterthought and consists of a staging yard and some long loops for running.
I couldn't get an overall shot, but here are a few pictures attempting to get an idea.

David - It seems as though your weather forecasters across the pond are no more accurate than ours are over here. Did you ever get the severe weather yesterday?
Hughie - Wow! 17° in H-town. Pretty damn cold for your area.
Joe - At least it seems that your representative is working for some of his constituents. Unlike your ex-Senator who always seemed to be working for himself. Did he get a pardon???
Mikey - I haven't missed the memories of work at all. It's so good since retirement that I don't have to be somewhere every day when I wake up; unless it's my choice.
Patrick - Now I understand why you don't care for Medicare, you just have too much other stuff going on. Yes, it's true that if you don't sign up when you first become eligible, the penalties last a lifetime. But only if you go beyond just Parts A & B. It's been good for us. Other than premiums to Medicare, our supplemental Blue Cross plan and our Humana prescription plan, we have paid nothing out of pocket in 9 years of using it. That included 4 separate knee replacements for my wife, (the 2 original and the 2 required to undo and redo one of the originals). My employer provided plan was OK, but there was a co-pay for everything. Plus that premium was greater than Medicare and the Humana one. Blue Cross supplemental is an additional cost though, but that's the one that takes care of all of the co-pays. Somewhat evens out.

Everyone have a good day today.

Off course not!!! Our weather forecasters love to 'scare people'. They put names to anything to make it dramatic. I ignore them. Just look outside. If it is wet, it is raining; dry it is not.

One day off course they get it right. Not today.

Time to see the train room.

Patrick, Willie or any of you that have passed or are about to pass that magic age. I'll turn 64 next week. What's the deal with signing up for something I wont need for at least 5 years? If I sign up, am I compelled to spend $$$ for something I don't use??

Good mornin' y'all from sunny Nacogdoches. It's 22 with w/c of 20 - high for the day in lower 50s low tonight 20 - no precipitation in the forecast. Moving day one days closer.
Had late lunch yesterday with Nurse Judy and some of her old nursing buddies. Margaritas and talk of bodily functions, although not as loud and graphic as in years past... A couple still working but most retired, some already gone. NJ been nursing sick folks for 50 years. Definitely taken a toll on her physical well-being. And, after 50 years, I'm still simply "Judy's husband." Friday afternoon is family farewell get-together. Her family - 2 sisters and brother plus nieces, nephews, cousins, etc. Me - I have 2 brothers, one I haven't seen or heard from in years and another whom I seldom see. so...
Medicare's been ok for us. We have AARP/UHC Medicare Advantage plan. Paid well on hospitalizations. Balked on a couple of expensive meds, but getting what I need. Waiting to see how new rules on Rx drugs work out. NJ has a few more problems than I do and takes some high dollar heart meds but except for the "donut-hole' thing everything was affordable. Waiting to see how new rules work out for her too.
'Bout this time next week we should be well on our way to the frozen wilds of Wyoming...
Y'all take care and have a good day.

Just about to go to the train room and received a telephone call to collect grandchildren from school. Not really our day to do so, but a minor family challenge (elsewhere) and I have to 'step in'. Only taking them home, so should see the train room later.

Daughter & SiL of to Toronto, Canada in the morning.

Good Morning All!

15F @ 65% with stars. Have 3 planets in the AM - almost directly West right now about 20 degrees up from horizon. Noticed them about 4 days ago - they were in a line horizontal. Yesterday they were tilted about 45 degrees from horizontal with one completely out of line. Also one at dusk/early evening probably 15 degrees to the West from South and about 25 degrees up from horizon. Got my long lens out and had a look - Venus. No pix then as the tripod was in the somewhere place. Too cold now or I would give it another try on the three in the AM.

Willie: I just love the 'get up and do what I want' part too. I guess that it is kinda - flow with the wind in what ever direction it blows. I end up puttering around doing what I think I should get done, then of course get side-tracked and do other stuff, and I don't even care as long as everything gets touched and done over time.

This is one of the ends to the oval Helix. The red line arc's mark were the ramp(s) will be stacked and the black squares position the ramp uprights. Could not get high enough for the whole 1/2 circle ( 84" ) so use your imagination. 30 degree arc's for those uprights. I could not reliably mark those with either the tiny protractor or the big speed square, so those two sticks above the clamp on the right are inside/outside chord lengths. It does not have to be exact, but closer than protractor/speed square. Sure somebody will ask why the 6 inches on the outside. This it to be more of a SceneX vs standard Helix. Bottom and top will give me the ability to turn whole trains. About 8" down from top and up from bottom will have track necessary to meet my grade for the transition area in the middle of the room. I think the new cutter will do 60 degree arc's cuz it is huge which should save me some time.

Reworked the Helix calc's to where I have 1" less in the total rise for those 1/2" vertical transitions between the lower and upper layout levels at the top and bottom. Also changed the ramp separation to 4 3/4" from 4" just to give me more 0-5-0 room. That changed my overall uphill grade from 1.25% to 1.38% and the vertical transitions at 36" length is 1.3% so I should be able to get those 20' trains up and down without issue.

Maria got volunteered to take care of a friends dogs while he is away for 3 - 4 days. Great dogs so that should not be a problem. I am going this morning to help; she can handle it afterwards. My concern is his driveway and Maria's lack of ability to drive on ice. We will see.

You are currently in a unique situation, with a better than average healthcare plan than people in the private sector or the Federal Government. I can understand the sticker shock you are facing from that perspective.

We have (Railroad) Medicare. - the difference between Railroad Medicare and Social Security Medicare is that it is provided through the Railroad Retirement Board, instead of the Social Security Administration. I have a supplemental policy that covers what Medicare doesn't. It is through the Railroad Unions. My Part D, is through a Blue Cross Affiliate.

My wife has a $2000.00 drug also....we pay it over 12 months.......last year our out of pocket for this same drug was $6000.
The beauty of original medicare is that pretty much everything is covered without co pays, prior approval, or restrictions as to doctors in a plan. (Medical Necessity). Like George, my experiences with Railroad Healthcare Insurance were positive, although I cannot say the same for Amtrak's "Amplan", which was in a lower tier.

I would definitely avoid Part C - Aka "Medicare Advantage". The only ones to benefit from Part C, are the Insurance carriers and their agents.

Good morning all!

Currently 14F, Temps have started to fall again. This morning at 6:30am it was 22 degrees and that was our high for the day. We received a dusting of snow again. no more than a 1/2". Really rare that we are not getting much more.

Started laundry and the washer is on the fritz. It would go through the balance and then stop according to my wife. I went downstairs to check it out and noticed the drum wasn't spinning. I turned the drum by hand and it started to go through normal cycle again. Its now on its second load. I suppose this is the warning that its going to die soon. Told the wife to start looking and get one ordered.

Isn't home ownership great?

Volleyball game tonight. Its an away game so travel and dinner out is in order.

Have a safe day everyone!

Have you seen the price of rental properties lately?
I was being somewhat sarcastic ;) I know (in most cases) being a home owner is always best.

Does your washer have built in diagnostics? Most are simple to work on and YouTube is loaded with DIY videos.
I'm not sure if its a model with diagnostics. I unplugged it and maually spun the drum a couple of turns which got it going normal. I probably wiped any fault code it captured by unplugging it.

Its on its 3rd load operating fine again, but Its 15+ years old so its probably time to start looking.
