never could understand the concept behind people relocating to a different state & then voting in support of policies comparable to those of the state they fled.
For some reason, that concept is quite common. But, it's what they are used to, feel entitled to, and the only difference is affordability. An alarmist might suspect that they are really colonizing, the state, but most aren't that focused beyond I want what I want when I want it.

We are seeing some of this in Central Jersey, which is still reasonably affordable. Because these new residents, are willing to pay almost anything for what they want, and the Bankers are willing to finance them, my annual Tax appraisal went up by 69,000. I won't see any effect until next August, when Next year's taxes come out...

Way down here in Texas, native rich folks buy big ranches and don't tolerate the mostly liberal views of society that comes from folks who move in from the Left Coast. Austin is the exception here, not the rule. It's all of the Silicon Valley companies moving to Austin to escape regressive California taxes and excessive governmental regulation; as well as expensive housing and generally high cost of living for their employees. Several examples come to mind, Tesla, Oracle, Hewlett Packard, Dell and others. A home in Austin (which is the most expensive housing market in TX) averages about $500K, while a smaller sized place in the San Francisco area is $1.25M. In my part of the state, the median home price is $250K to $325K. Those folks that move there can not only pay for a home, but have plenty leftover for their high-priced cars. Thankfully, I am 250 miles away from that mess.
For the most part I agree with you Willie on this one. My son has been in Austin since 2009 when he moved with his then business partners from Phoenix Arizona. He was 24 then. Our daughter and son received a liberal childhood (mom) with inklings of mild-conservatism (me) and conversations from a right almost wingnut conservative super rich guy (his uncle, my brother). The problem he sees in Austin is #1 the terrible crazy housing issues definitely pushed along but not 100% of the reason caused by “techies”. It was an expensive housing market already when he got there. Basically those house prices are pushing the workers not in management further out of Austin into the outlying Travis County cities and towns. He’s worried about the homeless tent cities that are choking the city and the clashes between City of Austin politicians and the Governor over how to handle them. He says when you are at a light coming off one of the freeways downtown and under the overpass and a guy gets out of his tent to take a dump 15’ away is disgusting. Gee, I agree with him on that. It chases away tourists. Houston found a simple solution to their homeless problem. Gather them up, put them on a bus and drop them off a block away from City Hall in Austin, true story. He is truly frightened though by the socialists moving in from every state not just California. You have some of the greatest tech orientatEd companies, (Dell, Samsung, Intel, Tesla, the ones Willie wrote and many others) in the USA moving to Austin. While the billionaire owners talk a conservative game and they truly take advantage of the tax discounts Travis County is offering. They are letting the management teams and worker bees preach socialism which in my mind and now the son’s are the greatest of threats to the USA.

oh well, we still are a free country and somehow it will workout. Just stay out of my woods we have still in Wisconsin and off my side of a supposedly extinct volcano in Paradise and I’ll be fine.

YMMV though

A FEW MORE LAYOUT PHOTOS
As many of you realize, it is difficult to portray a winter theme without snow. A south Alabama village often has temps in the 70's F.
Also, town budgets were very tight during the 1930s, so I can rationalize a scant Holiday display for Hope's Landing.
Our scenery man also knows how to re-rail a steam engine.

Xmas aside I really like the cracked earth effect, weathering on wood and individual planks, and the detailing outside the shop fronts, and the old church far rights is lovely. Santa on the general store is perfect and out of reach of little acquisitive bands, I have seen a lot of show modellers bemoan lifted car, ward, figured, and worst is it is not just young who will snaffle such things, one model,et was devastated when a rare small loco he had lovelingly repaired was lifted on its first show, he had left it at the front to be admired, someone taking that a little too far

Good morning y'all. It is 51 and dark.

Flo- Coffee, bacon, and buttered toast please.

Christian- I didn't know y'all had cacti in France. 😄

Covid- I keep my thoughts and opinions to myself on this one. Having had it myself, I know the seriousness of it. However the response and the "control" of it dips into my feelings and opinions on politics, and this isn't the place for that. I refer back to my previous posting on politics to explain this stance.

Willie- I am sorry to hear about your brother. I lost my dad to throat cancer when I was 15. It is not a pleasant experience for any involved party. Prayers for all of y'all. As for the Lakewood discovery, I do not know Mr. Osteen personally, but men of his ilk have always rubbed me as being charlatans as well as heretics. While he may or may not have had any involvement in this particular incident, I am sure he has fleeced more than his fair share of sheep in his years there. I'll leave it at that, since this is not the forum for that either. 🤷‍♂️ Beautiful sunset by the way. Nice work on the new building as well.

Sherrel- Somehow I don't think "Oops, my bad" is going to go very far with the boys at the repair shop on this one.

Ex-Californians- I have little to no experience with this demographic, but I am well versed in Ex(or current)-Floridians and the dangers they pose. Whenever they are about, you are in constant danger of becoming part of a 'Florida Man' news report. I still rank leaving that state as one of my better decisions. 🤣

Steve- Thank you for fighting the good fight. Continue to run the race set before you brother.

Troy- that's not a bad thing. In my opinion, being religious sends as many people to hell as sin does. Ok, really stepping down off the soapbox now.

D&J- Nice setup. I have one similar, but at present no room to set it up or to run it. It's about 15 cars long, without the motive power. It's currently boxed up in storage for the moment, as we have begun the process of packing away everything we don't use daily in preparation of moving, or I would pull it out for a photo op. I may have some pictures of it somewhere, but I can't think of where at the moment.

Time to sip some coffee and relax a bit. Gotta pull the Christmas tree out of storage after church and then pack for the week. I'm hoping for enough down time in Raleigh to visit a shop for some more paint so that i can assemble the walls of the station. I need the detail parts to finish the interior, but I checked and realized they were shipping from China. So it may be July before I get them. 🤦‍♂️

Y'all have a blessed day.

We did the same and got out of Dodge, we lived within east reach of London sold a e bed deli and for the same price bought a 3 bed bungalow and 14 acres of land, and immediately offered over the odds for an advance field, that field has since x4 in price.
The difference between the rich and the slums, slums cannot afford land and live cheek to jowl, the rich can afford land, although a lot of idiot buy ‘prime’ property in high rise and the big cities where land is expensive, and in. Properties that are little better than prisons when a pandemic hits.
~it used to be the norm if you bought freehold you got the lot, but if you bought the property and someone else retained the land you got a thousand years, that did not drop slowly it zoomed down to one hundred years in London and the are already cases where people one hundred year leases are running out, they are forbidden to ruin the ‘property’ ie the land so the landowner scoops up a nice house which they sell for 200 years leased again, not the cleverest cookies some people.
We have never spent a bundle making this property pretty,we threw everything at the mortgage and laid off the bank asap, now the government might catch us with some law,but the bank can’t get it’s sticky little paws on it,and when we retire we have ways of making an income to help the pensions, and we have invested in solar, and woodburner to try and free us to some extent from the utility and fluctuating fuel prices, and an ev to that end also, we had serious financial issues in the 90s and learnt if you can’t buy it cash don’t buy it at all. Even a car. Unless your employer is underpinning it with petrol allowance and expects you to drive sonething decent. Last year was the first time we ever bought a new car,a,ways ex demos or when short of cash cheap runners. I am a serious bargain hunter, and if push comes to shove the layout will give us some cash if we are ever short, selling only one or two items at a time so it is not taxable.
government pensions and health care in my opinion will just get tighter, this pandemic has puts governments in hock and they will eventually tax our xxxxx to pay for it.
when prices are really good we invest in clothes and store them against the future, and look to ensure we have electrical option if the power goes down, luckily we have trees and can chop and store and dry, our solar is unfortunately on grid but the government subsidises it,we would like an optional battery back up but non of the options seem worthwhile at the monent. I suspect all this greenhouse effect will make those options more viable but we have been looking for over 20 years and not a good sniff so far,bio fuel might be an option but amazingly uk companies don’t supply it to the uk only to the third world, go figure.
ok rant over sorry.

Good morning all!

Still tired, and the bloody greyhound woke me up twice during the night. Last night's 'flurries' turned into 2 - 3 inches! Nice.

Girls coming this evning for dinner and will fire up the charcoal and do a 3 pound salmon filet on the grill. Wifeykins making roasted Acorn squash with cayenne maple glaze, boiled potatoes, and a Butter lettuce salad with mustard- tangerine vinaigrette! Yum, yum.

Nap after church ought get me about to rights. The week is rather light for evening meetings - might get some train work done!

Good sub-zero morning to you all!

It's -2F out there, so I'm going to stay inside and do an indoor job.
Today, I'll be working on the interior of my little HO scale Cafe'.
Late last night, I was fiddling with resizing and adjusting the following photograph to fit inside my DPM building:
Cafe_(1).jpg

That kinda looks like a 1960ish, small town Happy Days cafe' interior, which is what I want.
There is a slight problem, in that the foreground chair to the left is a bit big in the resizing. I'm going to try it, though, and see how it looks. If it all works out, I should have a progress photo for tomorrow. If it don't work out, I'll have to search for another photo with less foreground clutter.
Everything I do, is almost entirely experimental at these early stages in the layout building hobby. Don't forget, I'm basically a beginner, with my modeling experience coming from other genre's. Mainly, plastic and R/C aircraft.

I need to feed and walk the dog. Then I can get to modeling. If I don't come back soon, I should be back after the spring thaw, when Ol'man Winter releases me from his grip.

Have a good one!

Morning from here where it's 44F looking for a 73F high - supposed to be clear and sunny, however the fog is so heavy at the moment that I cannot see the house across the street!

For once, I am steering clear of the political and religion talk - don't want to raise my BP this early in the day!

Francine - More coffee, please - I will order eats later, thanks.

I suppose that would be possible, for someone who's more computer smart than me. I don't know how, and I'm afraid to learn it less I push something important out the other side of my head, to make room for that kind of smarts.
I'm happy with fiddling, but, thanks for the suggestion!
Guy, that is me with anything involving the camera. I have threatened myself a few times to enroll in a local photoshop class.

I really like the diner photo.

Well howdy there internet cafe dwellers

It's Troy again.

Today let's talk about elephants and blankets

When it comes to Willie's point about people from one state moving into another, then voting for change in the way things happen, I'm reminded of Hannibal (all of them) back in the Punic Wars.

Rome wasn't an empire yet. Just a basic republic, kind of. And this dude with big pachyderms shows up in the neighborhood, demanding everyone agree with him.

Romans weren't having that, but they kept losing the battles. They'd been having problems spreading their brand of Italian goodness to the Greeks and other outlying area, and now this tribe of Puni show up. Warlords with funny names like Xanthippus and Hamilcar Barcus decided to spread their flavour of "culture" where ever they ventured. Until Rome's navy beat them up on sea... The Romans were spreading t

The Gauls had issues as well... As did the Iberians and the Numidians ....

Then this Hannibal Barca fellow decided to move and occupy everyone (more or less). No voting. Argue with the elephant if you don't like his rules. 😜

I'm wargaming this period soon. At least, here in America, ever since our ancestors gave blankets to the first nations of people here, we've pretty much had open borders from state to state (barring that little debacle back in the 1860s). Our resettlements after then have pretty much been without violence or rampaging elephants. I'll take the ballot box over PO'd pachyderms or boxcars of deportation any day.

How about some Romans, on the painting table (Imperial ones, but I've got Republic ones staged up as well).
