Happy Birthday to Hughie and anyone else in the last few or next few days I didn't notice.

Prayers and thoughts to John in Indiana. Health issues always suck because you usually feel helpless to be able to do anything and the doctors et al are not always forthcoming about the details so you have to put your life into their hands fully.

(My wife is a cardiac nurse -- used to be in the cardiac ICU and is now in the Cardiac Pist Operative Recovery Unit -- meaning the usually non-admitted outpatent stuff like stents etc. She tells me that depending on the perceived ability of the patient to understand what is goingon they often do not tell them much of the details)

Good morning internet dinosaurs (I am one too - learned basic on a trash-80)

Day 2 of the cruise. We're cruising the BC coast this morning. It's shortly after 5am local time. I'm 3 time zones behind. But I managed to mostly sleep in until 4:30

Yesterday before getting on the ship wife had a very short window to trade some option, and made a bit over $500 US. She spent that on appointments at the spa. I sense a trend in future cruises.

So, this morning when I logged into the ship internet for the first time, I decided it was ok to spend $80 on the "Unlimited" Internet connection. Mind you, it's as slow as molasses in the winter, but I don't have to worry about logging out and saving minutes.

I'll save pic posting until later on when we're back to stable interwebz.

Today is a sea day. So it's a lot of take it easy time with 2000 of my newest friends. I'm wearing my Engine 765 Nickle Plate Road cap. So if you're on board, say hi!

More later.
I recently found my White Pass & Yukon hat from when we did that trip up the coast.

I also have a WP&Y caboose in HO on my bookshelf.

Shoulda taken your advice, but was already out the door.

What the fancy bakery had:

The eclair was yummy, but "coffee" was all espresso based.

Here's a close up of the Salted Caramel Mocha. It was yum, but not a cup of dark roast.

So I went to Timmies. Ordered at the kiosk because there wasn't anyone at the register.

Indian guy comes out (it appears the establishment is owned and operated by one family) pour my large dark roast. I look around asking where the cream is, expecting some pitchers set out for me to add my own.

He toggles through his screen on the order kiosk

You did not order cream. it is extra...

Nevermind.

The hotel room has little packets of coffeemate powdered. I'll use that.
No one deserves to have to suffer through Tim’s ….

OBSERVATION: I normally don't watch TV at all, but a few weeks ago, I watched some highlights from the Republican Convention. Yesterday and today I gave equal time and watched some highlights from the Democratic Convention. Not a lot of difference; a lot of hot air lauding their own candidates and bashing the other party's candidates. Seems like the same old platforms and both parties are committed to rewarding their backers and donors. Both parties are making promises that we all know cannot be kept.
But a big difference that I noted this year is American flags. They were on stage at the Republican convention, but I haven't seen any on stage at the Democratic convention. Anyone have any idea why??? Serious question, no politics please.

Serious question: Am I less patriotic because I don't fly an American flag from my garage, but the neighbors two and three doors down do?

Snarky supposition: Perhaps the dems are afraid the other candidate will sneak in like Conservative Commentator Matt Walsh did (in a very bad disguise), and start hugging the flag as he's been wont to do to appeal to the "must have flags" crowd.

Pro Campaign staffer tip: Lesson #1 for any candidate, always have a US flag pin on your lapel or collar. If it's a state office you seek, have a state pin on the other lapel. Why? because a very vocal set of voters notice. I'd guess that 95% either don't notice, don't care, or look more at record and platform.

Not a very good day yesterday. My heart doctor retired 2 weeks ago and I had to get a cardiac test yesterday for my forecoming hand surgery next week. I past the test with flying colors. My wife had the same heart doctor that I had, and I mentioned that the previous doctor noticed by listening to her heart that she had a leaky heart valve. The knew doctor listened and took some tests and he is scheduling her for open heart surgery ASAP with 1 week in the hospital and 3 months recovery. She has a knee replacement surgery scheduled in Nov. My son is coming from SoCal to visit us next week and my surgery is scheduled for his day of departure from SoCal to here...Joan's open heart surgery is scheduled for the day of departure from here to go back to SoCal. This hit us like a ton of bricks...next week will be our 44th anniversary ( was married for 18 years with my first wife)...I think I was born married.
New schedule. Since our regular heart doctor retired and the new one took over, they called today and said they would like to take a new test to see how much her heart valve is leaking. The will take the test next week. They put her to sleep and take some sort of probe and look at the top of heart to see how badly it's leaking, depending on what type of surgery she will need. I will be an AKG of my foot for forthcoming surgery. Parts stop working properly when you get older.

Advice for younger readers, take all your vacations when you're young. If you make it to 80, you'll won't enjoy it as much. In 1980 We started taking Amtrak trips (two 2-week trips a year). We just looked at the Amtrak map and picked places to stop at. We always took what they call the economy bedrooms, just big enough for her and me. All meals were included and we enjoyed traveling through the backyards of America. Saw a lot of stuff. We also rode many trains that are no longer available. We very rarely flew anywhere; we did fly to New Orleans several times to watch the Saints. Even flew there for Monday Night Football. We have taken Amtrak everywhere except New England. Even took VIA rail, the cars were older; but very pretty routes. We did that for over 35 years and have a lot of memories

No! Absolutely not. I have neighbors who served in Vietnam who have never flown a flag, not flying one has nothing to do with patriotism. Many folks in my neighborhood in the 50's and 60's served in WW2 or Korea and never flew a flag. Flying one is an outward sign of patriotism, but not flying one could just be a budgetary matter to some folks. Serving in the military is usually a good sign of patriotism, but also not serving does not make one any less patriotic.

And no sooner than I posted, I passed the TV and saw flags on stage today. They weren't there yesterday when I looked, maybe they come and go depending on the activities. And as Bill's picture shows, they were there when the Obamas were on stage and at other times; I didn't see the Obamas. Remember that I have only seen snippets, maybe 5 minutes total from two nights.

Back to other news:

64 and sunny in the rainiest place on earth.

Our ship docked in Ward Cove, at a new dock built by this cruise line. We had to take a bus into Ketchikan, about a 15 min ride. We walked around, didn't buy, didn't take pics, came back to the ship for lunch.

Serious question. For those of you that LOOOOOVE Buckee's, what makes it special. I'm not sure I've ever been to one. Our travel buddies are from LA (now in Los Vegas) and haven't experienced one. What the heck makes them special enough that people drive out of their way to get there?

Impossible to answer without involving politics.

Bucee’s is a nice big gas station that has a great convenience store. Is it the best out there? I doubt it but why do we stop? They have the cleanest restrooms of any public restroom I have ever been in.

When we drive we try to use Culver’s bathroom rooms first, then McDonalds. Neither Bucee's or Culver’s are nationwide but we have found stopping there the bathrooms will be good to great. McDonalds, East of Ohio are hit and miss but anywhere else are good to very good. There is not enough money or need for us ever again to stop in a Valero station. YMMV of course.

Willie, excellent NON POLITICAL reasoning written as to the flying the flag. Not everything is political!

I've only been to one, and that was driving back from Florida, and we didn't go out of our way to go there, it was off the Interstate, and we needed gas, restrooms and snacks.

I agree with Tom, the bathrooms were very clean, and spacious, and a huge variety of food, drinks and snacks. The fuel island had at least 40 pumps, so no waiting there.

I suppose they could be considered the Wal-Mart of gas stations, only thing I can figure.
