My new computer with Windows 11 pro loaded on it, the better choice than the Home edition for security, came 2 days ago. I was very concerned about Windows 10 security updates no longer supported by Microsoft in October. As I said in another post about my bank accounts being hacked into about 10 years ago which created a big problem for me. I'm all about that not happening again.

Since I’m bored while on the bus here is an update and some pics. The airport bus just left the stop at Kobe Sannomiya. Just over an hour to terminal 1 at Kansai International Airport. That’s the one they built on a man made island off Osaka.

The first two pics are from the bus stop, looking up and down the street.

We’re waiting at the stop. (I cropped the heads on purpose)

And our bus

Cost is ¥2200 for an express bus to the airport. That’s about $15.50-$15.75 at the rate you’d get on a credit card transaction.

And a random picture from last night. I wanted to buy some nail clippers for my neighbors who’ve been watching our house but didn’t find any at drug stores or department stores out where we were at. (Meaning the ones I wanted. They had nail clippers but I wanted the Made in Japan ones from KAI and the stainless lever ones if possible. Only one drug store had had KAI and not the stainless and not the qty I needed). So I took a trip by myself into Osaka Umeda to the Yodobashi Camera. I know they have them as I’ve bought them there before. I rode the Hankyu Semi-Limited Express and Hankyu uses standard gauge rails (unlike JR and some of the other 3rd party rail companies). But there was a small stretch that was double railed for cape gauge like JR and for standard. The cape gauge aren’t being used as the whole line was not double railed (and the cape gauge rail is rusty). But here is a pic that shows the double rail. And the difference between the two. It may be Hankyu used ti use cape gauge rails idk. They’ve been standard for a long time.

The NW part of Oregon is full of the big cutlery companies and their annual warehouse sales.

The Kai/Kershaw/Zero Tolerance/Shun factory is about 3 miles from my house. When they have their big warehouse sale every year most everything is 70%-80% off. CRKT is about 1/2 from them and Gerber is about 3 miles the other way. Benchmade is about 8 miles north east. Leatherman Tool is a couple miles north of Benchmade.

My buddy years ago kept calling them the communist news network or chinese news network. I used to laugh but didn't really understand where he was coming from. Now I understand.

I had been seriously thinking of sending the FCC a letter to define a news agency as requiring at least 75% reporting and leaving the remaining 25% to opinions and commercials, with a heavy emphasis on commercials. Yeah, I know they can still sway reporting on what they want to report. But, without a news tag, if that even matters nowadays, would be taken away and limit access.

I had to laugh when the communist news network had an "expert" on north korea come on and start to criticize. He was some kind of advisor or actually involved in the clinton admin as they were drafting up the nuclear monitoring program for NK. The only thing I could think of was "you got us here and the communist news network chose you to whine." yeah... Credibility? check.

Good morning,

Another overcast morning. We have been getting smoke from Canada lately, I wonder what it is like for people who live close to the fires?

Chipped beef over toast on deck for supper tomorrow, and I am cooking! Everyone invited.

I have been retired for two months now, a week has transformed to one Sunday followed by 6 Saturdays.

We have a Doe with a new fawn visiting us now. One of the percs of country living.

We do not watch any sports. I wonder if there is a genetic marker to explain that?

Willie - when we purchased our land, the wife insisted we be no more than 5 miles from a grocery store. That has both a upside and a downside.

Karl--good to hear about the successful surgery!

Playing with trains up for today--

Rails responded to my email and are doing right by me. She said that although the model ran fine for them and that the tech was saying that if I received the returned model and it continued to run poorly for me, then any further returns from me would require me to pay for shipping. But she added that since I was having issues with it, she would offer the refund vice return. I took the refund and thanked her for understanding.

That partially restores my faith in that market, but I am still going to pull out of it. Too many issues. My 30 year old Kato GP35s are running perfectly with no issues right now.

Congratulations on your retirement! Yeah, I don't know what day of the week it is anymore. My pill box is the only thing and sometimes I forget to take them, so am off by a day.

Am curious as to why you retired as I remember you had just received a promotion? No need to answer if too personal.

I decided to retire 2 years early after dealing with a lot of panic attacks brought on by memory issues. I was the branch head of a communications upgrade office. I started having memory issues where I couldn't remember what I did 2 minutes ago. You know the old saying about lying and trying to remember the lie. Well, no lie, just couldn't remember what I did.

So instead of remaining on the job and being a liability, I decided what would be best for me and the office was for me to leave. I'd mess up the Musk question about what I did this week or whatever it was (my buddies who are still working made reference to it, but i didn't know what they were talking about). Management did offer me to extend, but I turned them down. The 2 year early out is taking a big chunk of change out of my retirement but I know I made the right choice. Still have the panic attacks, but no major liability.

BTW, I've been visiting your u-tube site. Nice work!

Good Morning All!
58F @ 59% clear. To be 90F later - better than the 94F yesterday and is to be cooler as the week progresses.

Bronco came home yesterday and I screwed around with it for a few hours. Could not duplicated the oil in the water complaint ( no water in the oil ). Will play with it some more today and watch some more. Has a couple of rust spots on lower body which should be easy to git rid off although I may need to weld in a a small piece of sheet. Other that than, only things I can find wrong ( so far ), Radio is loose in its' bracket, E Brake no workie, and radiator does not overflow into the coolant reserve. Lost about a quart when I attempted to pull the radiator cap off. Was not hot, but warm so I only took a shower, no burning. The thing has power for some stuff, all the glass goes up/down, seats forward/back. Washed off a ton of pollen and other muck.

Have no idea what those brackets are on the bumper. Maria wanted it out under the old shade tree so she can go through the interior. Pretty clean with no rips; but some small splits in the soft stuff and mold. Vinegar and water should stop the mold. Paint is in pretty good shape except oxidized. The Eddie Bauer Edition is much better than my old 87.

Good morning. 7:29am local as I start typing and it’s 89f degrees heading to 109+! The wind is moving at 3mph but has actual gusts up to 9 but it doesn’t make anything feel better. The brother’s doctor appointment has been moved to 4 this afternoon after being cancelled for tomorrow.

Terry and I have been driving an EV here. It’s a Rivian R1S. While I am not a fan of EV’s the car we are driving is nice but not within the $$$ range of a normal consumer. The gas price at the Circle K 5 miles down the street is $3.19, not bad. With all the oil reserves and oil still being found just in the US I still don’t see gas being displaced for decades yet by electric if ever. The charging factor to my thinking is still the biggest drawback. The brother has solar panels and 4 powerwalls here at the house. It seems the power grid in the Southern end of Las Vegas is iffy in bad weather. He has plenty of charging capacity overnight for a car that has a range of 410 miles with all the battery upgrades.

My sister has doctor’s appointments back in Pasadena on Thursday. So Terry and the brother’s girlfriend are flying out with her tonight. The plans are for Terry and the girlfriend to come back Friday or Saturday. The brother is looking for the doctor to let him swing a golf club. Yesterday we headed over to the golf course and he putted for awhile. He is now using a cane for normal walking but does use the walker on our now 3 times a day walks. Today we walked 30 minutes out, rested 5 and came back. 2 more times yet today plus his walking in the pool but still with the harness.

Enjoy the day

Hybrids I like. EV's are a battery fire waiting to happen or a HazMat event in an accident.

The renters next door put 2 Tesla charging stations in. I sure hope one or both cars don't don't experience thermal runaway (bada boom). Our gas is still hovering just below $4.

Those brackets are for using the Bronco as a toad. A towbar connects there, and goes to a ball on the tow vehicle or motor home.

Advice needed!

We are planning a trip via Amtrak from LA to Seattle. Then drive to Vancouver spending at least 2 nights in each City. Instead of flying back to LA it was brought up we could cruise to Hawaii!

1st we’ve never cruised. Is an 11 day cruise too much for our 1st cruise? What room should we get? The 4 choices are Interior, Oceanview, Balcony or Suite. Has anyone done the crossing to Hawaii from Vancouver? It says 6 days to cross, At Sea is the actual itinerary. My brother has cruised and said we’d love it but. I have heard from past friends cruising the Gulf of Mexico or Caribbean is different that the Atlantic. This would be the Pacific.

Thoughts from the experienced cruisers please. Celebrity X Cruises is the line the ship would be Celebrity Solstice.

Thanks

First of all I'm going to be biased here and say do it!

Never done the oceans, just all over the Caribbean, so not sure if the experience is different.

I never ever wanted to do a cruise till my wife talked me into it for our honeymoon. I must say I was hooked from the beginning. The food and the shows were fantastic. As for the room, we booked an interior stateroom because we didn't know any better. The cruise line upgraded us to a balcony room at no charge since it was our first cruise and our honeymoon. We have booked a balcony stateroom on the 4 additional cruises we have been on. While you wont be in your room a whole lot, it is nice to have that balcony at night or some during the day when you just want to get away from crowds and have some me time. We always take the late seating at the dining hall. It was nice to go on a shore excursion in the morning and come back and shower and nap, If you get hungry just go up to the buffet and grab something to snack on. After the late show, we would go grab pizza or a calzone from the 24hr pizza joint, or get late night room service. We have never considered a suite, the price was a little high for us compared to what we would of gotten from booking it. If they have the option go with the extended balcony. It has a little more space and is worth the upgrade. We have done this on our last couple of cruises.

Cruising isn't for everyone, but I say you have the opportunity to experience it, go for it.

Good morning, all! 88 =HI 100. Yesterday's grocery run was a little shorter than usual. I was surprised by the span for eggs. Some, a dozen, were 3.29 while others were 7.49 for a dozen. Add another thirty cents to the gas discount at Kroger's. I'm wondering why some of one are still seeing fuel prices near $4.

Karl - good to see you back.
Todd - I was going to tell you it was for towing behind an RV but Terry already told you, so skip this line.
CHAD - Safe travels.

Willie - when we purchased our land, the wife insisted we be no more than 5 miles from a grocery store. That has both a upside and a downside.
When we first moved here 44 years ago, there was a full independent grocery store 12 miles away. It expanded twice in the ensuing time. Then it was decided to widen the Interstate (IH-35) on the East side of their corner lot, and simultaneously widen the state highway on the north side. Eminent domain took away 2/3 of their parking lot and they had to close. That was in 2021. The same road improvements also took out 4 of the 6 gas stations in town as well. The store was demolished and Quick Trip was able to build a gas station/convenience store on the remaining land on that corner, which at least got back one gas station. That store employed over 200 people, many of them part-time high schoolers working after school and during the summer break. All of those jobs were lost. In 2023, the man who owns 6,000 acres across the road from me, died. He also owned a few thousand acres on the NW corner of that location. His family sold some of it to a developer, and they are now building a Tom Thumb grocery store on a part of that land. It probably won't have the same atmosphere as the old place though!

Tom: Have friends in Seattle? If not, just get off in Vancouver. Woops, assumed you were talking about Vancouver, WA. Anyway, from Sea you can take the Victorian Clipper to Victoria - much more stuff to see there vs Vancouver. Butteryfly exhibit is a must see. Terry pby would like the many flower gardens too.

It took me 25 years to get Dawn on a cruise ship.
For our wedding anniversary in 2002 we travelled on QE2 Southampton to New York. On the journey there was a hurricane.
From then on I have never had to book another cruise. Dawn has said "How about this one?" Eighty four (yes 84) times.

For anyone looking at cruising I say do a short one. If you do not like it, it is soon over. If you like it you will be booking the next one.

Inside, Outside, Balcony, Suite. At first we did a lot of cruises in Inside cabins. Once we went Balcony that was the only way at the time. Then Dawn chose Suite. Why did we not choose that in the first place?

Celebrity Cruises. We do not have a favourite cruise line, but when we have travelled Celebrity we have enjoyed their ships. We have not been on Celebrity Solstice, but on the same class of ship.

Hope This Information Helps

We have cruised a lot. 11 days is long for a first cruise, but Celebrity is one of the better lines. If you like eating, drinking, and being lazy for 6 days before you reach port, then you will enjoy it. Remember this is a floating hotel with probably 3000 other guests.

Room wise, middle of the ship and the higher up the nicer the room (size, balconies, etc). There will probably be several formal nights also, so pack the suit.

We did a Hawaii cruise around all the islands, that started in HI, and it was awful. The biggest negative was that it was an American crew. (very poor quality in everything). You're leaving from a foreign port so you should have a foreign crew.(very service oriented)

The best cruise we went on so far was to Alaska from Vancouver BC, at the end of August. It was either Holland America or Royal Caribbean. There were no negatives. The service was amazing. It was mainly an Italian, Filipino, and Turkish crew. After the first night the lounge staff knew our names and drink preferences. At dinner the first night they had ice cream on the menu and I asked if they had pistachio. They said no, but the next night they made sure to let me know they had made some.
