Running Bear’s June 2025 Coffee Shop

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

Good morning, Tuesday morning June 10, from Kobe. We're finishing packing and figuring out when we need to get to the bus this afternoon for the trip to the airport. Normally we take a train but the bus is less expensive and takes less time from here, and is easier with all the luggage. I need to find the bus schedule so we know what the goal is to get to Sannomiya station, where the bus pickup is. We take the subway from here (it's 1/2 mile from my SisIL house). We have 5 suitcases to cary the loot home and the two SisIL (one has been visiting from Yokohama since last week) will go with us to help us with the luggage and stuff until we get to the bus.

My watch says it's about 70F and I can hear a steady rain. The past day or so was sprinkles now and then -- I walked to the subway yesterday afternoon and only got mildly damp. Today it looks steady out the window and you can hear it on the roof.

Wife is finishing packing. Normally that's my job but she doesn't like to wait for the last day or the night before the last day and so assumed it. Since we don't have a ton of stuff to try and fit I let her do it. I'm much better at getting everything to fit if we have an issue.

We won't be home until about 1pm Wednesday, Japan time. (10pm Utah time on Tuesday). I've arranged a rental car so we just drive ourselves home and then I return the car tomorrow morning.

-------

An interesting train related thing. The following pic is the street behind my SisIL house. Normal suburban street, right? You can't see them, but there is a full Shinkansen bullet train line in that pic. The main Sanyo Shinkansen line (dual track) that goes to the south of Japan goes through an underground tunnel that follows along that street. I rarely hear the rumble but if it's quiet and if you listen you can hear a low rumble when one goes through. Seeing as that there are several an hour you'd expect to hear it more. I suspect the houses on that street hear it a bit more. My daughter says she's heard it more so maybe it's just my bad ears, but the SisIL and her husband say it doesn't bother them as you don't hear it often and you have to listen for it usually to hear it.

That reminds me of a line from The Blues Brothers movie.
"How frequently do the trains go by here?"
"So often you'll never notice them."

You can try and force the issue with a chargeback. It will burn bridges but if you can fully document all the problems etc and their failure to fix t hem satisfactorily you may win.
Thanks, but I don't need the extra stress. I'll order some stuff that they can't f-up. Since I am looking at doing a diorama, maybe some of that type stuff. I'll close the books and close the account.

I think they are going to charge me for the shipping of the mysteriously working loco to come back to me. Couldn't decipher the email as they kinda write like I do. I know what I'm trying to say but nobody else does kind of thing. Waiting for their response to confirm.

If it does not run like they show, then I'll go to the manufacturer and forums.

Does that involve body weight? haha
No. I just find nooks and crannies and know how to fit stuff. One of the suitcases was over weight so I had them give me stuff I fit into my roller carry on even though they said it was full. Luckily Korean Air doesn't weigh the carry ons as technically I am over (though they are under on theirs-- they just have backpacks).

One general observation about Japan. A lot of stores and stuff only mildly turn the A/C on. I was walking around Yodobashi Camera -- a huge electronics and toy and appliance and box and everything store last night. It was hot and stuffy in the store, which was packed. They had it mildly cooling. Trains are the same way. Most have signs that say "cars mildly cooled with A/C". So there is always this background odor of sweat. Not BO. Just mustiness. I think they've tuned it out.

Some of the nicer malls have it on more so you don't feel this way but a lot of the department stores etc are only mildly cooled.

When on the subway and commuter trains I like to be by the doors. At least on the ones I've taken recently (and in the past) the A/C is blowing there so you can get full A/C blowing on you, versus the mildly humid and warm feeling in the middle of the car.

You. get used to it and it's not hot. Things are cooled. Just not like we're used to. I think it's because electricity is probably expensive. Especially after they shut down all or most of their reactors after the Fukushima incident.

Vlasic pickles taking QA to the personal level. Straight out of the bottle. Since I've finished half of the bottle already and it hasn't killed me yet, I guess I'm safe. I don't remember if the lid popped when I opened it the first time. Normally I check for that.

Since I can't get Rails to pretest their models, I guess I found out who will haha

Check out that one buck tooth!

Ok, let's talk baseball. I was at one of Willie McCovey's last home games, at Candlestick Park, July 2nd or 3rd, 1980(?). I miss watching natural, no PED, talent.
That is an incredibly special memory! Thankfully, the steroid era is over.

So far, been a pretty good start for my Cubbies! 😀
I'll say! A half-game ahead of the Dodgers and only two games behind the Mets for the best record in the National League!

we're off in 10 min to the subway. Two cars...
God speed my friend!

Since I’m bored while on the bus here is an update and some pics. The airport bus just left the stop at Kobe Sannomiya. Just over an hour to terminal 1 at Kansai International Airport. That’s the one they built on a man made island off Osaka.

The first two pics are from the bus stop, looking up and down the street.

We’re waiting at the stop. (I cropped the heads on purpose)

And our bus

IMG_9528.jpeg

Cost is ¥2200 for an express bus to the airport. That’s about $15.50-$15.75 at the rate you’d get on a credit card transaction.

And a random picture from last night. I wanted to buy some nail clippers for my neighbors who’ve been watching our house but didn’t find any at drug stores or department stores out where we were at. (Meaning the ones I wanted. They had nail clippers but I wanted the Made in Japan ones from KAI and the stainless lever ones if possible. Only one drug store had had KAI and not the stainless and not the qty I needed). So I took a trip by myself into Osaka Umeda to the Yodobashi Camera. I know they have them as I’ve bought them there before. I rode the Hankyu Semi-Limited Express and Hankyu uses standard gauge rails (unlike JR and some of the other 3rd party rail companies). But there was a small stretch that was double railed for cape gauge like JR and for standard. The cape gauge aren’t being used as the whole line was not double railed (and the cape gauge rail is rusty). But here is a pic that shows the double rail. And the difference between the two. It may be Hankyu used ti use cape gauge rails idk. They’ve been standard for a long time.

Morning all,

Flo: Coffee, black and put everyone's beverage of choice on me...yes even the "hard" stuff.

Watched a late to me softball game with the oldest granddaughter's team last evening. Her team won. Going out to see the youngest granddaughter this evening, hers isn't so late, but it's an hour and a bit away.

Chad: Safe travels although you should already be in the air.

Not much going on yet.

Good Morning All. Partly cloudy and 70°, heading into a cooler few days with a chance of rain for the next 4 days. It's the time of year when I have to shuffle mowing in between rainy days and days where the ground won't sink under the tractor wheels.

I should be able to mow some of the higher ground today after Sunday's "Armageddon", which really wasn't that bad. But that 1.1" of rain on top of already saturated ground is causing the grass to grow like crazy. I have to empty the dishwasher while I wait or the dew to dry.
Yesterday was filled with mundane tasks all day. Disassembled the vacuum cleaner to remove embedded dog hair, did the backlog of burn trash, picked lots of Tomatoes and 2 more Yellow Squash from the garden and did some general yard cleanup after Sunday night's wind brought other peoples stuff in. That wind was from the east, so it blows debris from the road into the yard. Picking Tomatoes will be an everyday task for the next 6 weeks, maybe more depending on the weather.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I continued on my quest to run every car on the layout, looking for stuff that needs attention. It's been a relatively smooth task so far. I also started some assembly of the P2K covered hopper that I rediscovered the other day. I am a sucker for those cars, they're complex but enjoyable to assemble. Dismayed though, because I found two parts missing from the sealed kit. Of course, anyone can seal a kit with the right equipment. One of the four weights is missing, that I can overcome by gluing pennies inside. Yep! I still have a good stash of them. The other is a roofwalk support which I think that I can fabricate with some styrene strips that I already stock. I will call Walther's Customer Service first, since they now own LifeLike and the P2K brand. I actually have Walther's in my phone contacts!

Patrick - Most of the cities around here now have "Sprinkler Ordinances". Twofold, conserve water when it's not needed, and prevent misdirected run-off from freezing on the streets in the winter. They're more directed at commercial properties then the more responsible homeowners, although repeated reported violations will result in a fine.
Those "days of rest" are what retirement is like in the beginning, especially for those who own a pickup truck! Eventually you learn to say no.
Joe - I'd love to comment on your comment regarding the shit in LA, but I am going to respect the forum rules.
Troy - I don't have any concerns about the LA riot videos on social media; because I don't do X, Facebook or anything other than this forum. And I don't watch the live feeds posted here either. It's probably just the same people in a different city!
Kusojiji - I get my US news from mostly unbiased Internet sources from Europe, and surprisingly from Al Jazeera out of Qatar. CNN is not a news feed any more, it's a joke.
Hughie - I'm pretty rigid about the grocery list, sometimes to my detriment. I have missed some good specials over the years. But lately, I have forgotten to put stuff on it, which is a drag when the nearest grocery store is 30 miles away. So some things just have to wait until the next week.

Everyone have a wonderful and safe Tuesday.

Good morning all!

Should be another nice day today. Currently 62 heading up to a comfortable 76F.

Still waiting on my Scaletrains order to ship. They billed right away with the credit card that was on file. It was paid for last Thursday morning so hopefully today. I know they state 3-5 days, but usually its much quicker. I supposed its not like I really need them right away, I have 500+ other pieces of rolling stock to choose from.

Not much else going on yet, so we shall see.

have a safe day everyone!
