Rod Stewart !

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

I'll second that Larry!

The nice thing about his layout, is he actually did most of the modeling. Unlike some other famous people with trains.

Absolutely! That's what really amazed me, that he did it himself for the most part. You hear of alot of famous people and "their" layouts. But they are actually built by some company. YUK! Gak!? One of the quotes I like right near the end of the article, He said,"I don't want too much of that(other peoples work) on my layout. It would make the railroad too impersonal"

I also liked how he said it meant more to him to be on the cover of Model Railroader then on the cover of a music magazine.

He's a great modeler and made it in MR... Now all he need's is lots of money, a hot wife and a career in rock n roll and he's got it made. Oh... wait he's got that too. Lucky man.

Rod has an awesome layout that LGM and I enjoyed reading about.

In a way, the article kind of reminded me of several members here... You know, zipping home in the jet for a few hours of modeling and then it's off again. :D

Eric, that was bad. :) All I've seen is the cover photo but it looks pretty good if he actually did most of the work himself. Call me cynical but I don't know how a guy who spends 300 days on the road each year has much time to build a model railroad. Nevertheless, it's a positive image for us MR's that we're not all just geeks. :)

I've read somewhere in some magasins that he took parts of his layout with him on tour!! all over the world ..plane in...plane out plane in...plane out...money was not the problem, and he couldn't/can't live without modeltrains!!

If anyone hasn't yet seen and read about his railroad you all should !

Quote from Rod........ " I pity a man who doesn't have a hobby like this one_ it's just the most supreme relaxation."

One of my friends down under said that when the divorce was going through, Rachel Hunter was quoted as saying she was miffed that she was second fiddle to a model railroad.....

:D

I dunno, must just need a layout, because I don't get much relaxation here...

Its great that Rod outed himself. Maybe more famous people will come forward? I have yet to pick up a copy. I was hoping Wal*mart had it, but for what ever reason, my store does not carry Model Railroader.

Umm, yeah, that and taking just about every drug known to man. :( Maybe he's over that phase but Rod Stewart is certainly not a someone who I'd want a kid looking to as an example. He has had seven children with five different woman and is currently having another baby with his "fiancée", with whom he already has a 10 month old son. He's now 61, BTW. His model railroad might be great but let's not get too excited about what a great guy he is.

Wow, take it easy on the guy. It's about the hobby and layout, not his personal life. I don't know the life behind John Armstrong, John Allen, George Sellios, Malcolm Furlow, etc... But I'm sure none of them are/were saints (who is?). But we all still appreciate their skill as a Model Railroader and fellow hobbyist.

Also, many people don't build their layout alone. Since Rod didn't do ever single aspect of his layout, I find that great. This hobby is about sharing it with others. Some people are good at scenery, while others are electrical wizards. That's what I love about being a member of a club. Yes, I build a layout with my Dad in his basement, but I'm also an active member of my local club. I enjoy the camaraderie more then anything at my club.

Please don't take this as hostile, aggressive or defensive, whatever. All I'm saying is enjoy, appreciate, or hate Rod's modeling abilities as a fellow hobbyist and try not to judge his personal life past or present. We all come from different backgrounds, but enjoy the hobby that binds us.

Off my soap box. Let's go enjoy each others layouts now.:)

Ron,
People like Malcolm Furlow were not international celebrities. Rod Stewart is. Whatever peccadillo's Malcolm Furlow may or may not have in his private life are private. Rod Stewart's behavior and lifestyle are public. You cannot separate this man's public lifestyle from his hobby. Malcolm Furlow was in the background compared to his layouts. Rod Stewart's lifestyle is in the forefront and his layout is in the background. I'm not being hard on the guy, simply pointing out known facts. If he has a nice layout, that's great, but I still don't want my child to translate that into a man to be admired. I'm quite certain that Malcolm Furlow would not have been writing for MR if he lived a public life style like Mr. Stewart's. My attitude is neither hostile nor aggressive toward Mr. Stewart, just truthful. I never said he had a bad layout but his public behavior is fair game for comment. Just because he has a model railroad doesn't mean he gets a pass for his other antisocial behavior.

Now, I'll get down off my soapbox. Someday, when you have children, you might understand what I mean about role models.

 Hmmmm much self righteousness being spewed around here. Funny how the older somebody gets the better they behaved when they were kids. I'm sure everyone in here has plenty of skeletons rattling in their closet myself included.

Geez leave Rod's personal life out of it. Everybody whines that we model railroaders are portrayed as geeks and socially retarded manchildren, well here's an internationally reknowned and beloved celebrity admitting he too plays with trains. Did the man make mistakes in his youth, yes. Guess what everybody does. Does he deserved to be raked over the coals for it? No more than anyone else does.

In his youth? He just had his last child out of wedlock with his current girlfriend 10 months ago and is trying to have another before he says he will have a vasectomy and "close up shop". He's 61 years old, for cripes sake. His youth has lasted his entire life. Everyone here who has had seven childen (soon to be eight) by five different women, raise your hand. Nobody? I didn't think so. And how much time do you think he spent with any of those seven children compared to his layout? Does he deserve to raked over the coals? How about if he was on welfare (he's a US citizen, BTW) and was engaging in the same type of behavior? Think your reaction might be different? His being rich and having a nice model railroad does not give him a pass for his egregious behavior.
