Loveably weird
I've been doing some net research, and have found that this engine comes as both item #2099 and #2098. These are item numbers, not road numbers. The 2099's tend to run about $80-90 more than the 2098's. The 2098's are DCC ready, and weathered.
Does anybody know what the difference between the two item numbers is? And why the 2099's cost more?
Thanks in advance!

Chances are the higher priced loco comes with DCC and maybe even sound.

The 2098's are DCC ready. Not sure about sound, though.

DCC ready means just that. Its ready for you to install DCC.

That's why I said the higher priced one probably comes with DCC and maybe sound.

If you can give us a link, maybe we can determine the diff for you.

After thinking it over, and doing some searches here for opinions on the 5 pole motor and LokSound installed on the 2099's, I purchased one of these:

The reason I went with a 2098 was so that I could install the decoder and sound unit of my choice without having wasted money on something I would want to replace. I read someones post about the tea kettle LokSound board installed on the Big Boy, and decided not to spend money on something I would replace. The Tsunami sounds like the way to go, especially on these big steamers.
I will be calling UPS to put a hold and pickup order on the package as soon as I get the shipping info. UPS likes to knock, drop, and run if you know what I mean!
The wife didn't have a problem with me buying this (yes, I did ask her first), mainly because she recently bought about $300 worth of PartyLite items!
This is going to be the center piece of my layout, and a real inspiration to get it all built. I'm so excited!
I know how Mater felt when he exclaimed "I'm happy as a tornado in a trailer park!"
