RETIRED GUY PROJECTS

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

ACCURASCALE P CLASS HEADLIGHT

Finally got around to getting the headlight done on this. I did her sister a whille ago, but this one is DCC. Am planning on keeping her sister on DC.

I followed my notes and got the body apart, then drilled a hole in the smokebox and installed the headlight.

Added a 2K resistor to the socket side as the decoder doesn't have a good mounting point. I did modify the resistor orientation from this picture as the body wouldn't fit as is.

Programmed the decoder after disconnecting the stay alive and then reconnected it. Got it all back together and gave it a run.

Looks awesome!

ACCURASCALE 67XX PANNIER TANK HEADLIGHT

This thing came with two dummy lamps. Of course I have to make it work! So I drilled a 1.2mm hole in the plastic lamp and glued in a 603 warm white LED (had to restock on these).

Took the loco apart and drilled a .5mm hole in the smokebox. Glued it in with goop and gave it a test.

Used an ESU decoder and soldered the LED and 2K resistor board to the AUX6 and U+ ports. Programmed this with AUX6 tied to F0(F).

Also got the firebox flicker to work correctly and the onboard stay alive to work.

BACHMANN CORRIDOR FIRST CLASS COACH LIGHTING

Installed the DCC and lights in this thing.

I also added some pictures on the walls as I had seen on more expensive models. More luxurious?

I have 2000uf of 25v capacitors behind a 470 ohm charge limiting resistor.
FIRST CLASS CAPS.jpeg

Got it all together and programmed, then soldered the caps on and put the body on. I hope the other coaches that I have planned for have the same style interior as the light holder fits perfectly.

KATO GOURMINO DINNER CAR

I bought this thing to see if I could add table lamps. Well, Kato beat me to it.

Since this is stock Kato lighting, I knew that the flickering was going to drive me up the wall, so I added a stay alive cap.

So I found two gigantic spots to add the wires to and cleaned the insulation off.

Then I soldered 30awg wire wrap wires.

I used a 470 ohm resistor in-line with a 220 uf tantalum. Drilled two holes in the floorboard and put the cap and resistor in the lounge area (forgot to take pics).

Cleaned everything up and reassembled. It does work, but not as good as I had hoped. I probably need to reduce the resistor size to 100 ohms as was recommended by many, but I don't have any.

Passengers?

Nope no passengers yet. Haven't had the preference but may consider it.
We all do our own things our own way, but if you'll allow me to share my philosophy with you... :) Your cars already have interiors. You've now added lights so they will be quite visible. Nothing looks worse than an operating passenger train with empty cars IMHO. Unless you're modeling a platform scene of the train before boarding. This would be especially true in the United Kingdom! Your cars are well done, and the interior details are very nice. They beg for people. Passenger figures would be that last step to bring the train to life. You can get inexpensive figures on e-Bay. That's where I get most of mine. I usually space out about 10-12 figures per car. That many gives the illusion of a well populated car. If I have dome cars, I use the more expensive Preiser figures in the dome section. There are posts about doing this over on my passenger car thread if you're interested. Years ago, I didn't add people either. I added tinted windows or window shades to hide the empty cars. Then a friend got me started adding interiors to the cars. It opened up another dimension of detailing for me. Just a thought! 😁 I'll be doing this again on my current project. Three cars, two coaches and a Parlor. They have no interiors, so I'll be adding seats too.

Thanks for sharing your perspective and possible sources. I didn't care for the inanimate aspect of it, at least that was my feelings for it a long time ago. What I do see now is that it does add an additional dimension and adds colors and variety.

If you could post the link to your thread, please? I am also interested in adding interior features. I made these to add to my old timers but I need to scale them down a bit more.

The interiors of all of my passenger wagons are all very well detailed, some even have hand railings for the Twindexx wagons, separately painted headrests and armrests, and many are lighted to show there are no passengers. This is something I've been meaning to do for years and keep putting it off. I gotta fix this. 90% of my rolling stock are all passenger wagons.

Only one wagon, a Swiss SBB observation wagon came with people pre-installed...and that one isn't even lit. I wish there was an option to buy them populated or unpopulated, but no hobby shop I know of offers this service or option.

My thread is here: Interior work

Starts towards the bottom of page 2, then goes on for about two or three more pages. Plus I'm doing some interiors now, which will be posted over the next couple of days. There are also some posts on putting figures into the Rapido SP Dome cars later in the thread.

N scale figures are here: e-Bay N scale figures

Your work looks to be N scale. Mine is in HO, but of principle holds, some compromises are made with interiors. You may have to amputate seated figures legs to get them to fit in the seats. I had to with some cars. Once the cars are assembled, this won't be visible.

Awesome! Will have to dive in!

I have both N and HO. Problem is, I have all 3 scales of HO/OO, and all 3 scales of N. If I go with peoples, I may just shoot for the center scale.

I did buy some dudes that I was going to put into my HO D51, but never did. Just sized them up in my OO coach and they don't look too bad.
