Crazy idea I know, but lets say you somehow screw up your decoder by not knowing what your doing.... is it possible to reset your decoder as it was from the factory?
I don't know if you can reset a Bachmann one; I don't know too much about them. But, I have one in their newer 4-4-0. Have not downloaded their decoder manual yet.
A while ago, Tony's train exchange put the following on their web site regarding the resetting of decoders to the factory default. Here is the info: http://www.tonystrains.com/technews/dec_rescue.htm
I didn't see Bachmann there, but it may be an early type lenz decoder.
Hope this helps.
Bachmann decoders are made under license from Lenz. The decoders are the same as the Lenz model 1014E. Writing a value of 33 to CV8 will reset the decoder to the factory defaults. You can get a copy of the manual at http://www.lenz.com/manuals/index.htm.

Kennedy, they are now. I have one of the original Bachmann 70 tonners that came with DCC and the decoder has the Lenz brand name on it. It is the 1014E, which is now discontinued by Lenz. Somewhere along the line, they negotiated a license with Lenz and now make the 1014E clone in China somewhere. It's actually a nice little decoder for basic DCC functions and works great.
I went up to the Lenz site last night, and they don't have a manual specific to the 1014E, but they had ones for the 1014JST and 1014W. I figured the JST is the PnP version, so I grabbed that one.
Bachmann does have a computer printout of the CV Defaults, but the values are in Hex which I don't like....
Are you sure you have a Lenz or Bachmann clone decoder? What kind of engine and what kind of control station? I've never know the CV value of 33 not to reset a Lenz 1014 or the Bachmann clone decoder and I don't think there's any way to turn off brake squeal with that decoder. Do you still hear air letoff when you press F7 when the engine is standing still? That's the same CV as the brake squeal sound.
How exactly do you find out what decoder you have? Looked through everything I have that was sent with the loco and find nothing. If I can do it on the controller (Lentz LH100) then I have no idea how. If anyone can answer that here, then I wont have to start a thread asking it
But for those keeping track at home, I searched further on the web and found on Bachmann's site that CV30 set to 2 would reset it. I had tried CV8 to 8 and 33, plus a few other things (which was a major mistake!). I was getting the dreaded Error 2 and in a panic. Fearing I would need a programming booster, as my manual said, and with nothing to lose I kept at it, re-entering CV30 to 2 over and over for maybe a half hour.
It finally took.
No idea why it didn't originally reset it, except that maybe I did in fact need a booster, but got lucky 1 time in 100.
(Sorry to highjack this post. I think it is relevant though)
