Rebuilding the WC&W RR

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

The new trainroom was finished on Thursday. I took a couple of shots to show the room.

By Sat. night with the help of a couple of friends, there was 60' of benchwork set back up and most of the buildings unpacked. Need to get the track connected up and the wiring backin.

Maybe I'll have some more photos later.

Nice remodeling job, Glenn, especially the lighting and all the electrical outlets. Looks like the beginnings of a nice layout.

Thanks, Guys.

I have made slow progress this week. Most of the progress is not visible. I have been installing rail joiners between the sections. I have gotten a few more sections standing. The Loconet is reconnected to the UP5's. All but one of the UP5's are reinstalled. The last one will be relocated to a new location.

Looks like a lot neater job than I would be doing. :) I'm just relocating two buildings and have the whole pool table piled up with junk already.

This thing is going to be SWEET! I've got a pretty decent setup, but this trainroom has me drooling. If the layout is as good as the room, and it looks like it will be, it should really be something!

Jim, I don't have everything moved out to the train room yet. I have a number of book cases that haven't been moved in the room. I am delaying moving them until I get the power buss reinstalled.

Joe, a finished ceiling is the only way to go. This room has a regular ceiling. The previous room had a drop ceiling. This ceiling looks better, but I already miss the flexibility of the drop ceiling.

Philip, should I tell you the room dimensions and really make you drool? :D Okay, I won't make you suffer. The room is 32.5' x 32.5'. It is a couple of inches larger than the last room, just to make sure any carpenters oops won't cause a major rebuilding of the layout.

I had help this afternoon and we got a lot accomplished. We stood up four more sections and installed about 60' of backdrop. The backdrop is only painted blue, but ready for more work when the time comes. My buddy, Gary, got most of the power buss pulled thru the layout. I just need to program and install the circuit breakers. Then connect the buss and it will be train time!:D:)

I'll post pictures of todays progress later.

Today's efforts. Only the 2 staging yards left to set up. Progress was also made on the power buss.

It now looks like I will have address the lighting over the layout sooner than planned. The six 4 bulb fixtures doesn't seem to be enough. The Perryville & East branch areas appear dark already.

Sat. and Sunday were spent with #2 son and his family. The grandkids wanted to see the trains run. I finally got 30+' of mainline wired up before they left so they got to see an engine run before they left. I got the rest of the mainline wired up after they left this afternoon.

The ops session is scheduled for Sept. 12th. A lot to do in the remaining time, but I'm getting excited about restarting the ops sessions!

Too bad y'all are so far away now. I recently came into a few N scale items. It would be fun to take a couple of the locos and run on your railroad again!

Glenn, those dark areas are the perfect place to install some cheap track lights. You can aim the lamps at exactly the areas that need light and the combination of the fluorescent and incandescent lights make for a more pleasing light.

Eric, sounds like an excuse for an ARG road trip!

Jim, I had thought about doing lighting over the layout, but it was on the "do later" list. I was going to build a shelf around the room at 6'8" to clear the doorway and put a loop or two of Lionel on it. The add a valance down and put lighting for the layout under the shelf. I may have to figure out some temporary lighting.

WOW!! I'm jealous!! Good for you though, to be able to have something that nice. I too am just setting my 27 ft x 18 ft layout back up. The great thing about my basement is that the guy who lived there before me put up a drop ceiling. Nice job on yours!!

Philip, should I tell you the room dimensions and really make you drool? :D Okay, I won't make you suffer. The room is 32.5' x 32.5'. It is a couple of inches larger than the last room, just to make sure any carpenters oops won't cause a major rebuilding of the layout.

OK, I USED to like you! Not any more! ;)

You know, with a room that size, I could model my whole shortline, mile-for-mile!

Eric, no basement this time. A 1,050 sq ft addition on the back side of the my wife's 450 sq ft sunroom. The nice thing about the sunroom is that I can walk from the original house to the trainroom without getting wet! LOL

Philip, my railroad started out as a shortline but over the years has grown into a mainline carrier. This version on the WC&W allows for bridge traffic to generate more through trains.

Now I need to round up 10 other folks for the Sept 12th ops session.

"Now I need to round up 10 other folks for the Sept 12th ops session."Glenn I would gladly oblige to help with the op session but a ten hour drive is a bit long for that kind of an op session. Now I would be willing to come if you would pay for air fare and car rental or pick me up at the airport. That way I could also visit my aunt in Selma for a while. The last time we were down to Selma was for my grandmothers funeral and My aunt Jane came running out of the house with a bag of fried chicken chasing us down the street with it hollering YOU FOR GOT YOUR FRIED CHICKEN. All of the neighbors and my cousins church's brought in fried chicken, we had enough to feed Patton's army in Korea. We all had a good laugh over that and it still one of the great stories to come from a sad time. I know the air fare is impossible but if I ever get that way again I would love to see of of you Bama guys and your layouts.
