In New Haven, Indiana there is a NS yard(ex-NKP yard). About 1/2 mile away there is a place called Hall's. It is at the point of the SR14/US24/US30 split, at least very near, and can be accessed from either highway. I recommend the Big Buster Platter with onion rings and a large Diet Coke.
Head east on the 14/30 split to the next light and turn left. Down about 100 yards or so, just before the crossing, to the right, there is a concrete mixing facility. Park in the drive, out of the way, and have a ringside seat.
You will have a view of the two converging tracks, one is the Butler Cutoff, and the main coming from the west and a view of the turntable, fueling facility, and the Huntington main as well as the large elevator there in New Haven. The eastern main is heading to Bellefontaine, Ohio, I think. maybe Bellevue, Ohio as I get the two confused.
And if you get a bit bored, you can visit the yard just to the west, and I mean JUST to the west and watch some switchers do their thing. Spent many a day off with the better half and grandson, all perched in the back of the Ranger watching the trains go by. You'll see Triple Crowns, expedited coal consists, coil cars from ?InTek Steel? in Butler, Indiana, Grain cars heading both east and west. The eastern loads are heading to Toledo, Ohio, via the Butler Cutoff, I'd imagine. Also auto carriers coming to and from the GM truck assembly plant. You can see it all, that's for sure.
And if you happen to go on a Saturday, you can go to the FW Historical Society property behind(north) Casad Depot(a WWII POW concentration camp turned into a DoD facility) just east of New Haven. That is where the NKP 765 was rebuilt. I don't know their current project, but it's still a fun and interesting time.
