I like it. My first job in the Air Force was in a Quonset Hut and my oldest daughter was actually born in a temporary hospital that was made of such huts. A lot of fond memories in all that.
I like the Rix kits. They offer a variety of simple basic kits that lend themselves well to weathering and added details that can make them really look like more expensive kits. A collection of "junk" typical of the type of business your q-hut represents will make it a standout.
Outback,
I really like the kit. It was easy to put together. The pieces fit really well. Instructions were good. It comes with three different man-door options. The one I used, I solid door, and just a door frame. There is also a 'two car garage' door on the back side.
Larry,
I would try a scratch build using a coffee or soup can. Cut some styrene for the front and back (I have the extra door options left over from the kit).
I'll post some pics if I actually do it
Doug, I used the older coffee can because it had a lot more ribs closer together. I used tin snips to cut it apart & added a wood wall w/1 window & a small door. I sold it about 5 years ago to a kid that kept asking for it for his layout. A plastic coffee container would probably work just as well. You could add some string for ribs.
Well, I gave it a shot. After cutting the can in half, I thought about make a really long Quonset hut, but with the non-corrugated ends, it looked too much like a soup can cut in half...
So I trimmed off the smooth ends and will probably go with two small huts. One open ended to park cars and one closed up to be used as a field office.
Great idea. It definitely has a place in model railroading.
I found a prototype that supports my open hut. I also found a half hut that I might try too.
Well I picked up my Quonset and checked it out. Nice little kit that I can see by the pieces. A few extra pieces that allow some window/door options too. I am thinking the standard look but with an added on lean-to style room to the side as an office space. Havent decided yet what it will be, but I do know where it is going on the layout so I guess that's a start.
I kind of like that soup can quonset garage you did there too. A bit of trim and weathering and who would know?
