I see a lot of people constructing their layouts with foam of some sort or another, whay is that?? I work for a company that cuts foam-rubber for autoparts storage and packaging. They come in 4x8x3 slabs (they call them "bunns"), and they have big bansaws to cut and shape them per customer order, or my own. My supervisor said I could take home scrap/bad sheets. Is this something I should stock up on for use in building my layout...for whatever reason you use them for?

It's a different kind of foam your talking about. The kind that is used for scenery is the blue or pink extruded foam normally used for insulation on a house... or abnormally used for scenery by us crazy model railroaders.:D You can find the pink foam usually in a builders supply house like home depot or a local lumber yard maybe.

The foam we use is styrofoam insulation comes in either pink (Corning) or blue (Dow). If the foam you have is what I think it is, it is too soft for landscape construction, but it makes a good coal load. Just cut it to shape and paint it black.
