Was there ever such a thing? It's just too good looking of an engine not to have in my fleet. If there is no Proto what would be the next best thing?*
*Keep in mind that I'm really fond of my $50 ebay P2K's.
Kato, would be one step UP from a Proto 2000. P2K did not do an SD40-2. SD40-2's were (and some still are) made by:
Kato
Athearn
Broadway Limited
GSB
Overland Models Inc.
Bachmann
IHC
(no particular order), HO scale listed, might have missed some.
Katos are the best of the bunch. The BLI are sorta OK, but there are some detail issues that folks like to point out.
I found out over the weekend that Kato did a re-run of SD40-2s; they have a DCC switch in there for the lighting package. I bought one yesterday, but haven't had time to look at it closely. It's in a newer box, with a slightly different color scheme. I think it's these:

Kennedy
That is them Kennedy! I'm planning to get both BNSF's, and a Santa Fe & BN. I'm glad they finally re-ran some HO models. The line was looking old...
