Proto 2000


How about GP40's? I cannot find much GP60 and SD 60s for sale, mostly there are GP38s, GP40s, Dash 8, maybe some U30C. Well to be honest I found GP / SD60s but they sell high, a bit over my budget at the moment, so in mean time if anyone can give me some info on the above, I might buy a couple within my budget reach, so I have somethign running, and then later I can get a good Proto 2000 SD60.

I also have a good offer at the moment for a (the offer is less then US $55 for both )
AHM GP18 Great Northern
and
Roco 424 CNW

Jbaakko, I know that AHM is at the bottom of your list, but is there a reason why?

Can I have any comments about these too.

Cheaper built locomotives, usually with truck mounted couplers. AHM is a conglomerate of IHC, Tyco and something else IIRC.

Proto 2000 & Athearn currently have SD60's, Rail Power Products made an SD60 (the one that Athearn now has). Proto 2000, and Athearn also have GP60's, as did Rail Power, and Athearn/RPP has/had GP60M's & GP60B's. Atlas has a GP40, as does Athearn.

Thanks for the links, I will check them when I'm back from work, as now I have to leave. I gave a quick look at athearn, and I can see that the prices are not so cheap either, but not bad, the problem that I mostly might encounter is that they won't ship to my location, even though I still have to check with them.

Going back to the offer I have, what would you suggest about those 2 engines? Kindly give your opinions!!!!

The Roco should be worth that $55 on its own, in my eye, but then I usually stick to $20-$30 Athearn kit locomotives on eBay. You have a Roco FP7 right? Roco uses an all wheel pick up and a good can motor from what I'm seeing.

Maybe someone else can chime in on how they like there AHM units.

If anything, see if you can find Athearn stuff on eBay, not the RTR because you'll still end up paying $50+ usually, but the older kit "Blue Box" as they're known. They're very rugged.
 
I recently bought a Proto 2000 at my LHS for $100. While I'll admit that my experience is limited to the old Athearn stuff I have been very happy with this loco. It is very quiet and operates smoothly. I do plan on buying other Proto engines.
