Proportional size

I am looking at O gage diesels for my ceiling RR. I am interested in the Williams, MTH, and Lionel Dash 8's and dash 9's. My rolling stock is mostly older Lionel that I have gotten off of ebay. What locos would be more in line as far as size goes to the older rolling stock? Would appreciate any insight you can give me. Thanks.

The older Lionel cars weren't quite full O scale cars. Some were even close to S scale (1/64th). Over the years, I ran Lionel GP9's and Williams engines pulling the Lionel 6464 series box cars and they looked fine to me. The William's SD90 isn't a full sized O scale engine but it looks good pulling the Lionel freight cars like their high cube box cars. Any Standard O cars from Lionel would look good, size wise. MTH did offer some RailKing engines that were closer to the older Lionel cars, but before you buy them, check the measurements. MTH offers two sizes of the SD70ACe's, scale and near scale. Good luck.
