Ok so I have been having problems with this loco lately. I thought it was dirty wheels, but thats not the problem.

What happens is that it will roll for about 1 inch and then stop. Sound also cuts out for a spit second. It tried cleaning the wheels but I can't seem to get it rolling with out it cutting out. I also can ''wiggle" very lightly and it cuts in and out.

I think there is a problem with the wheel contacts or something else.

Is there a special way of getting the carriers off of the trucks to expose the contacts? They don't seem to want to come off like other Athearn covers and I don't want to break them.

Any help would be great!

Take the couplers off and remove the shell. When you get it off, check and make sure all the wires are firmly attached to the lightboard esp the motor contacts (usu toward the center). You may want to take this opportunity and remove the cheap plastic clips athearn puts on the lightboard and the wires and just solder the wires directly to the board.

This may not be your problem, but if dirty wheels arent the problem, this is where Id check next. I had an athearn c44-9 that only had one set of powered trucks. The problem? The power wires had slipped off the lightboard.
