Hello, I have had an MTH NKP Berkshire steam locomotive for just over a year now, it was brand new when i got it and iv'e never had a problem with it, until now. I have another MTH Steam loco (I am an HO scaler) that runs fine on the same layout and controller and does fine. My Berk's chuffing cuts in and out at certain spots in the layout while my Class J does fine. I think its a CAM sensor (i think they are called that) but i cant be sure. I sent it to a certified MTH Serviceman and dealer in Chicago and it did nothing for him. It ran just fine. I know its not my layout because i run it on other layouts and it does the same. I have several buddies at the local model railroad club that have MTH steamers older than mine and have never had this problem. It has protosound 3.0 and PFS. It s the 1990's excursion version. Does anyone have any idea what this means? Please help i'm frustrated with inconclusive google searches and phone-calls to MTH.:(

Does it happen on a curve, and is it always on a curve going right or left? Could be related to location of a sensor or reed and its host tire moving away from it.

Hello. Have you tried cleaning your track? It looks like you might have some dirty spots and that might be a cause. William.

just a few questions..........
Is it always at the same place on your layout that it cuts out?
Is there excess movement in the axle which has the cam that would allow the cam to move out of contact with its sensor on corners or other conditions?
Does it hesitate or slow when the chuffing cuts out?

i have a NKP BERKSHIRE #757 mine went stupid & i had to reset it on #3 & it ran fine , i have to program the cab # back in it someday lol, gotta love MTH

It happens on straights also. The guys at the club were suggesting it is a CAM sensor.

It doesnt hesitate, as ive sad, everything else works fine, its always the same place, the tracks are clean because i run other MTH engines with no problems, Its not the curves and axels causing it trouble, it does it at the club on sweeping turns, dips, humps, and straightaways. CAM most likeley, thank you for your help, Cheers.

Track is clean, i run other MTH locomotives without any problems and i did clean it to no avail, as i said, its only the chuffing, it continues to move, ring its bell, blow the whistle, headlight and marker lights, etc, its only the chuffing.

the reset is loco#55 cv55 with a value of 55 & exit program then its factory reset then program in. cab #

another satisfied MTH customer

Its the Drawbar... After a year of arguing with my father to send it back, Its going off... The drawbar design was faulted and after pulling trains around the layout for a year the back of the pinhole that the Locomotive gets its power from was wearing thin, So the connectivity wasn't to great...

I assume you got the thing fixed!
I heard MTH Is going to do another run of the Berk's with a new drawbar design that doesn't have wires, or pins, or pin holes... Magnets i believe.... Or hooks... I have no idea...
