I bought this Monogram HO Hudson years ago and spray painted in black. I just put on G&D road name on the tender. I've never weathered any locomotive and it will be behind an engine house on it's own track. Question is: at first glance, does this engine look like a plastic kit designed for 8-year old kids? The engine house is a BTS kit and it is quite long. It was going to go inside of the engine house but I've put a partial roof on it and no one would be able to see inside even with interior lighting. Question is does is look semi-realistic and not a cheap plastic kit with wheels glued in place

My question is, why is the air tank, compressors and that valve at the rear of third driving wheel painted silver? They should all be black.
Also does the locomotive represent something in long storage, or waiting for service? The weathering would be different for either.
For the curious, this looks like New York Hudson of the J1 class, one of the most famous American steam locomotives. Sadly no NYC hudsons were preserved.

I think it looks fine. A pretty "high stepping" locomotive for the Gorre and Dapetid.

I guess I should have looked at the box...in my defense, I thought the engine looked kind of drab just being all black...don't know why I painted the rear valve white. I will touch up the compressor and valve plus there are 2 white lines to the right of the G&D logo that suddenly appeared that I will have to touch up also...The layout is in a transition stage leaning towards diesel switchers (SoPac)...Basically anything at a reasonable price and low maintenance is the engine of choice...Really low budget line, if it runs they'll use it

Steam is "high maintenance", so it makes sense it would be parked.
