old school
I have this older P2K SD9. I bought it years ago and never ran it much on my old layout with all 18" radius, it always derailed. Now on my current layout with 22" radius and #6 turnouts it still has been a troublesome engine trying to get it to stay on the rails. This thing will derail on a straight section of flex track or with the slightest rise in a rail in a curve. I feel my My trackwork is very good as all my other diesels and med duty steam run like a dream. Are the flanges on some P2K models smaller than found on most other P2K's ? Im thinking that these trucks dont allow proper axel movement to let the wheels roll over any kind of rise or low point? Even running straight through a #6 turn out it will sometimes ride up on a frog or fall to the inside of the turnout

I misplaced my NMRA track guage a few weeks ago so will have to get a 2nd one. I did compare it to other P2Ks and the wheels seam in spec.? are there replacement wheels for these with deeper flanges?

2 questions:

1 does it sound noisy? a growl gear sound? if it does it may have a cracked gear on the one or more axels...sometimes when this happens it can make that axel buck off the track.

2 you answered this one yourself...gauge the wheels spacing....

no, this one does not have cracked gears ,not yet!!!
yep, I need to get that guage

I was just wondering if there was a known issue with these?

The Proto SD9 has very tight trucks. I haven't worked on one of them in quite a few years. It's one of my projects that fell through the cracks. I want to do one up as an N&W one of these days. But it seemed to me that there was not a lot of pitch motion in the trucks, and this is critical if your track is not 100% perfect and whose is? I think it would be relatively easy to loosen them up, but without dissecting one in front of me it's hard to say how. IMO the SD9 has an excellent drive - it was the first P2K loco with 14:1 gearing, which unfortunately they didn't stick with... until Walthers took over anyway. I'd be curious to see in what way the new Walthers releases are different.
