I've got the detail sheet but I can't figure out how to get the parts off. I'm sure it's something very simple but it is eluding me.

My first attempt at painting this unit was a disaster. The paint pooled up in spots and I'm going to have to try again. I gave it a warm soapy bath for 10 minutes followed by a dip in Plastic Prep. Something was breaking the bond.

They work the same as Athearn Genesis I think... You have to remove the cover from the bottom of the trucks, then the side frames will slide off. The cover has pins that hold the side frames on. Be careful not to lose any gears or get dirt inside while the cover is off.

I'll take a look at this and try it.

Now a new problem. I lost one of the windows from the cab when I was removing them for repaint. Walthers called today and they don't have anymore windows for the SD60. What else might work?

Mac,
I think if you cut a piece to fit from clear styrene it will look fine, especially side windows, which are already thin in profile. As a hard lesson, one of the things I do is have small plastic tupperware containers where all the parts go when I'm building or dismantling something.

Thanks. I'll have to give that a try. I was washing this loco off after a good soak in Lift-Off. I didn't realize that this would also dissolve the glue and somewhere between the work bench and the sink this window went AWOL.

Once I get this window replaced I shouldn't have any more problems (yeah right!). I think I'm done with disassembling, stripping, and repainting. I'm pretty much convinced that I'm sticking with undecorated units from now on.

Thanks for the info. I'll pick up some clear the next time I'm at the hobby shop.

More problems. I got another SD60 in today off of ebay. This thing is missing the windows and light bars which Walters no longer has. Any chance the GP60 glass will work in this thing? Otherwise I guess I've got a parts loco unless some other shell will fit an SD60 frame.

I'd skip the GP60 parts, and just buy new lights and use some window maker stuff to add the windows, maybe with some clear sheet behind it.

Please forgive my ignorance, but you can get new lights and number boards? I really hate to have this engine become parts.

Mac,
Were these missing parts described to you by the seller? If not, return it for a refund since it wasn't correctly described. If you knew these parts were misssing, it would have been prudent to find out if there were replacement parts available before ordering.

Why yes, but it will be FAR cheaper to improvise then pay a premium for parts you've lost or damaged!

Its really up to you, but if its a P2K, Walthers is you're only real option. Life-like never sold parts to dealers.

It was described as new and never run. He said that he thought that all of the pieces were there. I took and chance and lost. I did contact him and he said that he would look around and see if he could find them.

I spoke with Walthers. They don't have any more windows, number boards, or lights for the SD60. If I want to make this work I'm going to have to find something. Expensive mistakes suck.

I should have read all my emails before I posted. The seller is sending me every window, light, and number board that he has that went to a P2K. Hopefully my parts are in there.

Sounds good! Looks like you're going to have a pile of left over parts too. :p

macjet,

American Model Builders makes laser cut window sets for both versions of P2k SD60M's.

The two window set is 152-304 and the three window set is 152-306. They sell for $4.95 msrp.

These window sets are awesome, they are pre-masked, (you install the windows with masking and after painting you can peel off the masking). Also many people replace the P2k windows with these because thery are clear. I don't know if you have noticed but the P2K windows are distorted from the molding process.

You can add AMB laser cut windows to an old Athearn Blue Box engine and it will look pretty decent. Heres an Athearn GP-60 I did many years ago;

Thanks for the info Todd. Those windows look great. Who makes those MU hoses on that great looking engine?

Edit: Are those separately applied windshield wipers or are they molded in?
