Thank you all for your help. I have another question. But first, I bought 2 separate sets from the thrift sale. The first set came with a transformer like I remember from 1959 0r '60 Christmas. It sat on its bottom and said "Toy Transformer" on the top where the lever is. The engine was plastic and pretty lightweight and the cars were tin litho, but only 4 wheels apiece. The plastic hitches looked like real train hitches. The second set was more substantial with a heavy metal engine, and the cars were heavier and had 8 wheels apiece. And the hitches resemble a pair of open scissors. I had never seen them before. The attached photos are items that came with the second set: a smaller transformer that sits upright and has an 8-13 volt tap and a 13 volt tap. Also included wasthis railroad crossing sign that has an electrical hook-up post, and also this piece of track with a little sign that says "uncouple here". I forgot to photograph the little sign. I'm guessing the RR Crossing sign hooks up to the 13V tap on the transformer? But there's no switch to operate the it. And I suppose the piece of track is where to uncouple cars. How does it work? Thank you.
