Just wondering if someone could tell me what the addition of the large fan is on the end of this A unit along with the two mufflers?

I've been thinking about the OCS set as a future project, even going so far as to get the decal sheet. I've been looking at the intermountain F7 A and B units for the conversion. They have shells and chassies:

The modeller on your link says he used a 48" fan and scratched the mufflers (we are all assuming that's what they are). The fan itself might be part of the cooling system for the dynamic brakes. Wikipedia says the later F7's from 1952 had dynamic brakes and a 48" fan associated with them:

Given the two F9 A units were originally B&O models built in 1952, this might be the answer to the large roof fan.

However, the Intermountain models are described as phase I (ie: 1949 built).

The later F7's had Farr Grills, which are an option with the Intermountain models. Do all OCS A and B units have Farr Grills, rather than the earlier version?

I managed to get to see one of the A units for myself at the loco shops in Altoona.Taken through the railings behind the turntable.It shows detail of 4270 that could be useful to anyone, like myself who wants to build a set of the OCS locos.

I'de say the fan is for the HEP system or dynamic brakes.

And I too want to do an executive fleet but would just use moden loco's and take a F7 B unit, customize it to a generator car only.

I was going thru that guys site, he used a SD35 to create the NS geometry train(loco), but other message boards are saying it is a former SD9? Anyone able to confirm what it used to be and if the frame was altered at all?

In its original form, it was NW 1530, an SD35. It got totaled when it was about 9 years old, and NW was able to weld enough of the remains together to make a slug out of it.

thanks. going thru NS's stuff on rrpicturearchives.net i see they have 2 of them. One called "the brick" which has like 2 spartan cabs joined together.
