I got in the post this morning, my new Athearn UP dash 9.It runs very nicely, with plenty of pulling power. My interest is mainly for Norfolk and Southern, but after visiting Pennsylvania a couple of times, I found that many other companies run over NS lines, which means I have quite a free hand in what locomotives I can run on my layout, and still be reasonably true to life.
Are there any tips for looking after my loco, there are no instructions in the box, about oiling, or running it in.
thanks

Across the pond!!

I see the different Loco's that run on NS tracks nightly. Thats the big advantage to working out of the NS intermodal yard - gives me stuff to drool over!

I,m looking on the Railpictures.Net website everyday so I,ve seen plenty of combinations of locomotives, running with NS horseheads. I just wish I could get over to see more of them firsthand.

That is a beautiful! I am amazed how much of an improvement the mfgrs have made especially Atlas, in quality and workmanship. How does that run on a 22" radius?

At the moment, I,m just running my loco,s on a temporary oval, measuring 13 feet by 7 feet, with 22" radius curves. The Dash 9 runs on these fine, as do my other 6 wheeled truck locomotives, no derailments or other problems. But my planned layout will have much bigger radius curves, more in the region of 30" so the loco,s will look much better on those.
I,ve found that the Dash 9 will pull about 25 freight cars with ease, even at quite a low power setting. It will also run double-headed with my BNSF SD75i quite happily, the motors in both loco,s must be very similar.

If you luck upon a newer RTR loco, it will have a newer motor, instead of one of the older motors with the new dcc ready board. The newer motors are wound askewed simialar to the genesis motors and are very compatable with them.

I will second that 2-26 stuff. My buddy has a non climate controlled garage layout and has 3 custom painted athearns that started having performance issues so he took them off the layout. i took the 2-26 stuff there today and brought his old athearns back to top running condition with a couple of drops of 2-26. even helped his track issue. we couldnt get halfway through a session without having dirty track issues. we ran two sessions tonight with the 2-26 on the rail and wheels of the locomotives without a stutter of a locomotive once! i now swear by the stuff!
