New to site and railroading.

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

Hello everyone.

Just getting started in the model railway world. Im currently working on a HO layout. My plan was to build a O gauge layout but just done have enough room right now so that train is going to be an around the room near the ceiling model.

I have attached some photos of what im working on currently, still in the drawing / planning stage. If anyone has any suggestions that would be fantastic.

Thank you for looking and I look forward to this great hobby.

Welcome aboard!
One big observation-
How are you going to reach the back and far corners? If you have to reach more than 24" it ain't gonna be fun. If a train derails in that tunnel how are you going to retrieve it?

Interesting track plan, I see a couple reverse loops and continuous running too.
I’m just trying to imagine two trains running at one time, not that that’s what you have in mind.
I have to agree with the reach into the corner thing, you might want to figure that out early on.
Welcome aboard by the way!

You didn't state if this was DC or DCC, that does not mater about the reach comments, but the reverse loops are going to more complex in DCC.

Coming from the O gauge world you may not realize how complex you have made the wiring of this layout. I would start with something simpler myself. My first HO layout was a single 4x8 with two loops that had a crossover between the two and spur to a yard in the center. None of the reverse sections you have with the loops and wye.

You might want to post in the Layout Design and Construction section of the Workbench forum for detailed help with the layout. Of course you can read there about reverse loops as well.

Reverse loops was something I was definitely staying away from when I designed my current layout. I just didn't want the hassle.

Welcome aboard!

Very interesting track plan. Looking forward to seeing progress.

I was planning on going DCC so that if i wanted to expand I could run more trains. Now that reverse loops has been brought to my attention, im going to need to do some more research. I think i will want to keep it simple for this being my first layout, so I might take out the cross over..

Im looking at the HO as my entry to O scale... I have both, just starting out small.. Need the kids to move out so I have space for the O.

Thank you all, Merry Christmas

An additional routing option can be had by replacing your crossing where the 'L' meets with a slip. That will give you a long track to stage another train and also work your yards without fouling the main. And it does not introduce a reverse loop.

Welcome Yodaman! Just a quick tip - if you did decide to go with O-gauge (3-rail, I presume), you wouldn't have to worry about special wiring for reverse loops. Since the center rail is one polarity, and either one (or both) of the outer rails act as the other polarity, no special wiring is required. No matter how you go into or come out of reverse loops and wyes, the center rail is always the center rail, and never connects to the outer rails.
At any rate, model railroading is fun no matter what scale you choose! 👍

Oh i know... Wife just wont give me the room yet for a good layout.. lol. So until then i will master some experience with HO and secretly grown the O collection.

Welcome to the forum.

O, and HO, but no N - that's heresey!

I also think that tunnel could be a problem
if the layout is up against the wall.
