First, this paint job was designed by Zephyr. Second, yes I also stole his thread title!:D

For those who haven't been following the Rock Island threads in the Paint Section......

I tried to come up with a modern day Rock Island paint scheme. I played with several different designs and then decided that Zephyr's scheme was a dead on match of what the Rock would have used post-bankruptcy. With his permission I started my repaint process utilizing his scheme. We are coordinating our painting efforts to avoid duplicate road numbers and to have somewhat of a common fleet.

This is my first ever attempt at painting anything like this. Many, many, many lessons have been learned. I also couldn't have done this without all of the help and input from the members of this forum. Thanks!

This unit is 99% done. The only thing left for the shell is the long grab iron on the left side to the left of the "R". I broke it off three times and it wasn't going back on. So I'll have to bend some metal to replace this.

Feedback is appreciated as 5055 and 5066, SD60's, are being put together and prepared for paint.

Looking good. I think it is really cool how you and Zephyr are co-ordinating your modelling efforts for a consistent vision of the modern Rock Island. That just makes things even more realalistic.

Have you considered not putting the white stripe through the grill work? It is uncommon for modern paint schemes to include striping though grills. Painting the radiator and inertial filter grills black and the dynamic brake grill red would look more realistic to me. Kind of like the Chessie System SD50's, the vermillion stripe didn't go through the radiator grill and the dynamic brake grill was painted vermillion to match the stripe. Just my opinion.

Again, nice work and I look forward to seeing your fleet of SD60's.

I don't know? I never thought of another color other then black. What should they be?

Fan blades are generally unpainted metal. They start out light grey/silvery and get darker as they get covered with dirt. If your weathering is going to be light, the fan blades should also be light in colour. If you weather with alot of exhaust grime on the roof, then the blades can be blacker.

I never really thought about it. I assumed the over spray from the paint combined with exhaust would have them black. But now that I am thinking about it a lighter painted fan would show up better.

Very nice work macjet! That is really good for your first custom painting job. I am looking forward to seeing it on the frame.

For the white stripes, my inspiration was the beansniff scheme, which has the yellow stripes in the grills as such:

But in doing more research, it looks like they also paint the locos without the stripes in the grills:

And UP does the same:

So that is definitely something to consider. It might help the locomotive look nicer because the white stripe wouldn't get grimy and it would save time by not having to get the decal into the grills.

macjet,

AMAZING!!

Between you & Zephyr(Eric) you guys ROCK!! Island, that is....

I just wish(and I'm sure many others do too) that the real Rock Island was still here. That paint scheme would look totally awesome out on the road. Keep up the excellent work and I'm looking forward to seeing your next project(s)

Regards,

Thanks joe. Zephyr gets all the credit for designing this scheme and doing all the planning to make this happen.

After having to strip my two newest SD60's twice (another thread, another time) I'm starting a side project with a new RI covered hopper. I think Zephyr has some new coal cars coming out soon as well. Stay tuned. Same bat channel, same bat time.:D

RI #5120 ran it's sea trials on the LMRA Gulf & Denver Railroad Authority last week. Programming was a success! It went in the direction it was supposed to go, the lights worked as expected, and all the sounds were doing what they were supposed to do!

5055 and 5066 should be tested soon and the three will be running in revenue service hopefully by the end of January!

Mac, very nice paint job. I rather like the black and red separated by the white stripe. Now for my two cents, I think those long red handrails just fade into the body. How about painting the tops white to go along with the other white stripes? I love giving advice if I don't have to do the work. :)

Being my first loco and my first decoder install I was expecting a big puff of smoke. I was quite pleased hearing the engine idle and the horn blowing. I do have to go back and put a little more space between the speaker and the shell to get more volume.

Rock on, macjet! Very nice work and glad to hear everything worked out ok. Keep up the great stuff - looking forward to seeing the other units!
