Hey guys, I've been reading these forums a lot (before finally registering), and was hoping you guys could help..

I purchased a Athearn RTR/Blue Box (I think it's a GP40-2, but don't have the paperwork or engine in front of me, so I can't say for sure off the top of my head) set in January, and expected the usual wear and tear... well it started getting to the "lube driveshaft" issue (or so I thought) - as it would get to curves and then stall out and start motor-grinding (especially if it was traveling above 45 scale mph)

So I popped the shell off and the motors and gears all appeared to be fine and still decently lubed, so just as a test ran the shell-less loco... and it was still having the issue... I happened during the test to put pressure on the metal "nose" with my finger and it took off again, with no issues. And in fact ran quite well for a while that way.. put the shell back on to test it, and it continues to run at the moment with no grinding issues whatsoever (got it up to full speed for about 3 full laps around the current track)

I'm trying to figure out if there's a problem with the nose weight on the model (and if so,what's the best way to add weight to the nose?) or if it was just a fluke issue with the engine at the time?

DaSaintFan, first thing I'd check is the trucks are assembled correctly and installed sitting on their pads correctly and lastly, check for any broken axle gears. From your description, you pushed down on it and it seemed to fix the problem.

And by the way, welcome aboard!!!

I didn't even think about checking the pads... (the axle gears I checked and was good with).... will probably check those when I get home tonight.
