Bombardier have just announced a 486 million dollar plus order for a brand new design of electro-diesel locomotive, 26 for New Jersey Transit , and 20 for Montreal's AMT commuter system.

The new locos are to be powered by both overhead electric and a diesel engine (although obviously not both at the same time....).

As a regular traveller on NJT when I'm in the States, I'm looking forward to seeing these and indeed being pulled by them!

Thanks for the information, George. Is it just me or are commuter railroad engines starting to look more and more like busses? :)

Most definately, Jim! lol! Overall these definately have a European feel to them, very German looking!

They look nice and slick but how quiet are they ? I see California is passing a law to make hybids louder. I seem that blind people cannot hear them . First time I here somone wanting tm make something louder and not quieter . So now we'll have to make those electric locos louder also !

Nice! I kind of like them Wonder what company will provide the diesel?

supposed to be powered by 2 cat engines from what i have read on railroad.net. NJT has to re-invent the wheel again with this DMU just like they did with there PL42AC. Instead of just going with GE at the time to get P42's which have been proven with amtrak, they go for a 1 off custom creature with lots of problems. And now with this DMU monstrosity. Again could've gone with GE and the new P42ac-dm based on the P32AC-dm that amtrak and metro north have. The hudson river tunnels have 3rd rail in them for about 1/4 mile west of the portal. more of my nj tax money wasted.
