Just thought I'd say hello, I'm new here. The name's Mark. I found this board via a members signature link on a certain publications message board.

Just starting on planning my current layout. Freelanced HO set in Western Canada (eh?);) roughly between the '30's and '50's.

I'm from the United Kingdom, not sure if there are any other members on here. I'm finding it tricky locating a LHS that stocks North American product that is actually local!

Hello!

Modeling western Canada, eh? Grain trains and all? Do any of your hobby shops deal with Walthers? They have a nice array of elevators, generic stations, grain bins, small local businesses, etc. If your LHS dosent carry the things you need, i am sure that not only do several internet retailers ship to the U.K., but so should a lot of people on eBay. If someone, somewhere, in the U.K. has the items you need, most hobby shops would probably ship your items by post (provided you pay the postage, that is!) and if they wont, i suppose they are doing so well, they simply dont need your business!

What is the plan for the road? Grain traffic or what?

Tim

Mark, good to have you here. Were you aware that Sunset Models is producing a brass 2-10-4 Selkirk for release this fall? Before you cough up your coffee, it is only about EU$350-ish, and that includes a QSI full function decoder. Not sure if this is in the mix for you, but if you are intent upon a western Canada 30's-50's theme, you may want to have a serious think and budget for it. Don't take more than a day or two because they need orders immediately. I got mine through Uncle Dave's Brass. He may still have room for you.

Thanks for the welcome!

2-8-8-0, my "nearest" LHS (90 miles away) does deal with Walthers, but you can't exactly "pop round" to have a look for inspiration.

Next one after that is 100 miles. All the real LHS are UK models only. When I was first starting out in '05 I asked in one store and got the sniffy "oh that's continental stuff, we don't do that" (looking down his nose)

Oh well..

As for "traffic", I was thinking (as it's a fictional province) more along the lines of logging and more passenger trains.

and Selector, thanks for that, but I don't think I'm quite ready for a brass model just yet. :)

Welcome aboard Mark!

From a fellow Mark and as a Canadian, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in our raliroads. :)

Seriously though, welcome. I'm new back in the train game but if there's anything I can do to help as a "local" on your layout, by all means. (Although I am in Eastern Canada. :) )

Mark

Haha thanks!

Is it me or is it hard to find any old style Canadian Pacific stuff? I always keep seeing the new red and black, but I love the old burgundy and silver.

Welcome Mark!
You'll find this is a great place to hang out.
I live pretty much mid Canada and work from East to West on all the RR's so hopefully I can chime in with advise from time to time.

Welcome to the forum! We do have a few members from England (and/or UK, never sure), so they might have more hobby shop info.

Actually I've seen the full script Canadian Pacific stuff around, mostly on eBay. There are some nice ones by Life Like/Proto 2000 - just depends what you're after.

If you are interested in passenger rail, you could look into modelling "The Canadian" - it is a cross country run that still operates today. In the later era you're interested in they used pretty much standard lightweight corrugated side Budd/Pullman cars. The Athearn Blue Box ones are pretty close, and they're cheap on eBay.

One place to look for good pics is at railpictures.net, search by road name then change the photo dates to older first. Lots of great photos there. Great stuff on the history of the road can be found at the wikipedia page too.

Cheers...

Thanks for that! I think I might go for The Canadian. I have a GN GP so I might go for something like an abridged version of The Empire Builder. (Especially as I'm freelancing. :p )

Welcome aboard, Mark. Don't know a thing about Candian railroads but we have a number of members from Canada, as you've seen. There are also several UK members, although one (**cough, Steve, cough**) keeps getting seduced by RC tanks. :) Stay away form that RC armour and you'll do fine.
