My Dad was an avid model railroader. I ran the trains and made a few models and scenery with him, but I didn’t do too much because he was more of a perfectionist than a teacher, so teaching a kid to model railroad was challenging. He had a complete B&O model railroad in our house, and then as I went to college they moved into a new house and he worked for 15 years building his last model railroad with the parts from the previous one. He passed away about 10 years ago and his last model railroad sat untouched most of that time in my Mom’s basement. I moved back to the area three years ago and my now 9 year olds and I have started making our own additions to it. We’ve been adding DCC and new models. They love engineering, electronics, and art so it’s a great activity to do with them. YouTube has been amazing for learning how to model railroad. I’ve learned so much from generous folks like “The DCC Guy”. I also got some key questions answered by friendly folks on these forums!
The turntable was over 50 years old and no longer functional. My Dad had never put in a roundhouse and the scenery in the yards was fairly minimal. So we decided to tackle replacing the turntable, which expanded into adding a roundhouse, which expanded into adding more yard scenery. I think my Dad would be happy with the update! I will always think of this as my Dads railroad, but now this part feels like our creation too. Here are some before, during, and after photos.
(Now we’re off to adding operating grade crossings.)
