I got my latest locomotive this morning, an Athearn Genesis SD70M in the EMD demonstrator colour scheme. Its a great looking beast, with plenty of detail parts that need to be added, including all the grab irons. I need to get the loco body off, so i can dab glue onto the irons,on the inside of the body, plus wire in the ditch lights. However, I,ve no idea how the body comes free of the chassis, and I,m reluctant to force something and break it. There is nothing on the instruction sheet so can anyone give me some tips ?

thanks

Ok, 2 ways to remove the shell:
1) if you only want to remove the upper body and no the walways, there are 4 tabs that hold the upper shell on. 2 by the radiator section and 2 by the cab. Squeeze the shell in at those points and slowly pull upwards. You might have to use a small screwdriver to influence it.
2) remove the couplers from the engine and slide the entire shell up off the chassis. But, now the shell will come apart in multiple pieces.

Thanks for the quick answer Thoroughbreed, its a similar method to how the bodyshells come off my Athearn GP loco,s.I,ll have a play about with it tomorrow

I bought it from an eBay seller over here in England,it cost me about $136 with postage. I know that I could have got one for cheaper over in Pennsylvania, but I don,t get over as often as I,d like to.

Well after some pulling on the bodyshell, and a little pushing with a flat bladed screwdriver on the four tabs, I managed to get the bodyshell off the chassis. I,ve not put the detail parts onto the shell yet, but at least I know I can do when I,m in the right mood.
Thanks for your help Thoroughbreed and Josh, its good to know I can get help when I need it:D

If the tabs are too tight, file them down a bit, or bevel the tops of them a bit so you won't have to squeeze so hard to loosen them.

I,ve found that it comes off reasonably easily, now I know the way to do it, but I might just sand the tabs as you,ve sugested, that would save me risking damaging the body shell by gripping too hard.

After removing, and refitting the bodyshell a few times, I found that the tabs come free more easily.
I,ve now fitted all the handrails to the loco, but I need to get another ditch light bulb, as I can only get one working, even after stripping back the insulation on the wires, to make sure I got a good connection.
I,ve been playing around with my camera this weekend, so I got a couple of photo,s of it, with the handrails in place.
For the interested, my camera is a Konica Minolta 7D digital, the photo was taken on a tripod, with around a 20 second exposure.
