Hello there. I am new to N scale and want to find out what would be used to activate something like a road crossing signal ( non DCC ). I really want to use that device to activate a relay to do something else, but need to send a signal to the relay while the train is on the tracks between two points. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks Patrick P.S. This is going to be on a reverse loop where the polarity will be flopping back and forth, if that matters at all.

A reed switch would do it on the cheap, but you'd have to equip each loco with the corresponding part to trip it. Really, any decent detection unit could trip it.
