I’m new to the forum, hoping that someone can help me with some information on an unusual kit. First off, I’m an HO collector, but I recently came into possession of a very old looking box that is labeled “Meeco Toy Work Trolley”. The kit pieces are all heavy Diecast metal. The base is 10” x 2 1/4” (approx). This box was in an HO collection I purchased, but obviously it’s much larger. My friend who is an avid O scale collector believes it is probably a 2 rail O scale kit. I’ve looked , but so far I have had no luck finding any information on Meeco Toy. I’m unsure if “work” is in the company name or its a “work” trolley. Any information would be greatly

Welcome to the forums, we are glad to have you here!

That is an interesting kit, thank you for sharing, I haven't a clue.

Here is what Microsoft's AI came up with:

Details on the Meeco Toy Work Trolley Kit

📦 Origins & Manufacturer

  • Maker: Meeco Toy Works (sometimes just labeled “Meeco Toy”).
  • Era: Circa 1950s, based in New Jersey.
  • Scale: O gauge (approx. 1:48).

⚙️ Kit Components

  • Material: Heavy diecast metal pieces.
  • Dimensions: Base approx. 10” x 2¼”.
  • Assembly:

    • Cab sides slot into the deck with pegs.
    • A long through-bolt secures the frame.
    • Detail parts (like resistor banks) bolt onto the frame.
  • Not Included: Trucks (wheel assemblies) or motor drive unit. Buyers had to supply their own if they wanted it operational.

🎨 Purpose & Style

  • Marketed as a “work trolley”—a utility car used for maintenance-of-way or light industrial service.
  • Sold as a budget-friendly kit, appealing to hobbyists who wanted to customize or motorize it themselves.

🔍 Collectibility

  • Rare: Collectors note that these kits are seldom seen, even among long-time O scale enthusiasts.
  • Condition Issues: Castings sometimes show chips or cracks; repairs may require epoxy.
  • Value: Prices vary depending on completeness and condition. Listings on collector sites like WorthPoint show examples with original box and instructions.

⚠️ Things to Watch For

  • Missing Parts: Since trucks and motors weren’t included, many kits are incomplete or loosely assembled.
  • Fragile Castings: Diecast parts can chip or crack over time.
  • Documentation: Original instructions and box add significant collector value.

📌 Key Takeaway

The Meeco Toy Work Trolley kit is a 1950s O gauge diecast model, notable for its rarity and utilitarian design. It’s more of a collector’s curiosity than a mainstream model, and finding complete examples with box and paperwork is uncommon.

Thank you for the reply ! I figured it was from the 1950’s era. Makes sense that I got it from a collector in New Jersey where it was manufactured. This is the first time I’ve ever seen this kit. Unfortunately, there are parts missing. I have the original box, but it is missing the original instruction sheet. I was able to roughly assemble it, the kit has the 2 main bolts to hold each cab to the base, but the nuts and all other screws are missing. Interesting find nonetheless thank you for the help. I must’ve entered my search query wrong because I wasn’t able to find any information on it.

You are most welcome and thanks again for sharing your rare find.

I use Microsoft's Artificial Intelligence "Copilot" for searches like this. It is free and built into my browser, Edge.

With AI still in its development stage you must watch for bogus information, but generally it is very good.
