My wife and I just moved into a new home that has an extra bedroom that she will let me build a small shelf L-shaped layout in. The room is 8x8. I'll be able to take one entire wall and 6 feet of the wall to the observers left, coming out 2 to 2-1/2 feet. The railroad that I am going to model in HO is the Quincy Railroad (QRR) in East Quincy, CA. It's an older line that was purchased and shortened by Sierra Pacific Industries. They use the line with a single SW7 that I've already modeled to move centerbeams and wood chip cars the 5 miles from the mill to Quincy Junction on Union Pacific's Canyon Subdivision where a UP local picks them up and runs them to Portola Yard. The prototype involves 3 grade crossings with only crossbucks, and two tiny bridges, but the last half mile on the Quincy Junction side is a 4-5% climb up to the top of the ridge the single line main sits on.

I am hoping to diverge from the QRR prototype with a single larger bridge. I want this to be a switching layout centered on the scenery and layout vs. operations. Any input or design ideas/suggestions/drawings/pictures will be greatly appreciated. The only idea that I have is having the UP main on the 6 foot leg of the L and using the 8 foot leg as the QRR line. It would be great to have some hidden staging for the UP main so a road switcher like a GP-38 or GP-60 can change out the loaded cars for empties.

View attachment 26778 This is something that I drew up in a few minutes, but it really needs some fine tuning, and some professional editing.
