I am an HO guy, and this collection is my father's 1970s trains. I cleaned and oiled everything, and found some locos that need work. As you can see, my father loved Fairbanks-Morse 4-6 locos. Unfortunately, I chickened out on getting at the drives on those. My fingers are too old and trembly to safely get into that. I was advised that this is the best way, especially since there are so many photos.

My favorites are the wood scribed 40 foot reefers with the names of old fashioned businesses. I wish I could find them in HO.
It’s funny… when I was doing all this as a youngster I was sort of the same, lots of boxcars but interestingly, plowing through the boxes I am finding lots of tank cars and hoppers for some reason - I must have had a thing for those at some point.

Coming back to it now I find myself strangely drawn to the passenger cars, RDC’s - I am even debating buying a japanese rural train service set some one has for sale here - then I start looking at the european sets …. I never imagined in those far off youth days that I would be dreaming of passenger trains running around a layout.

Yeah, I understand. That blue Japanese fast train in the photos is a rocket, though it does well at slow take off. I am amazed that the cantenary on the loco has survived all these years. It was the reason my father (the architect), got into N gauge. He did a huge renovation plan for the Memphis Riverfront in the early 70s, keeping the old building fronts (they were made of cast iron), and after all that work, he realized he would need to demonstrate a metro fast train to get people to the Riverfront with ease. He and I built a huge scale model of the project, including that speedy Japanese passenger train. It served to inspire big money to steal ideas, but nothing resembling the vast remodel he planned. That's why I am 73 and not a recipient of inherited wealth! Oh well.

Hello again.

That is a lot of vintage stuff.
Too old for me though.

I think the way to sell that is to lot it up on eBay.
In two weeks it will be all done.
If you don't have an account, you could have me do it.
I can test the items and know how to write a accurate listing.
A consignment deal.
In such a case we split the profit.

There are consignment liquidators all over the place...maybe near you.
There also are people that buy collections like this, but they won't give you much.

Hopefully if this all gets consigned to a dealer the OPwill have a link ….Iwould hate to see that Japanese car-set not find a loving home….

I really hate going to ebay to sell these. For one thing, there are many other ways to sell things online, and the others don't have nearly so much complication. By the time I sell it all, I would just be getting the process right! I do not like Facebook, so the Marketplace is not tempting. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to ask, either. Maybe if I travel to a large train show I can sell all of it. Or... I'm dreaming.

This is taking a lot of effort to research this stuff. The Con Cor passenger cars were a surprise. Some of them, basically identical bodies with different decoration are wildly different in pricing/value. When I get to the freight it might be different. And the FM Liner engines that my father liked so much... I haven't seen any of them yet for sale. Should I offer the matching passenger cars and engines as a set?

This subforum is for selling or trading, and the items offered need to be priced. You can reduce prices later, but there needs to be a price, either individually, or as a lot.
