Hi all, im new on the forum. Thought i would let you see something i am working on.
Always wanted to have a go at weathering but did not know how, so after watching a few videos on You Tube i thought i would take the bull by the horns and have a go.
I started with a Bachmann Box car i got off E-Bay for £5.51. At least if i screw it up i wont be out a fortune.
Next i needed something to work from, i searched through the web and eventually found a photo i was happy with. My model is loosely based on this.
Ok, time to bear all. After about 4 hours of work i ended up with this.
I was going for the "unloved" look.
Ok that was side A, now for side B.
That's it.
Graffiti didn't turn out as well as i would have liked but that's part of the learning process!!
Any comments ? Too much weathering ? Too mucky?
Noel.

Welcome to the Forums Noel, it looks like you nailed it right on, on your first try. Looks realistic, nice work
Cheers

Looks just fine. There are graffiti decals available if you want to save a bit of time evey so often instead of painting on your own by hand.

It looks great! I saw side A, and thought 'cool, he left the graffiti off'. I am not a fan, but I am impressed with your efforts.
That's very good for a first attempt, Noel. Well done.

I think the box looks good. But I don't understand why people go so heavy on the wheels and trucks. They're under the box, protected from the general elements. The ones in the photo you provided are even in pretty good shape. I'd back off on that part.
It's so weathered it almost looks like it wouldn't pass inspection and in MR land that's good. It reminds me of a truck I once saw in New Mexico. It has an orange rocker panel, two gray rocker panels, a broken front and rear window, a banged up tailgate and numerous dents. On the back was a bumper sticker that said "My other car is a piece of Shit too"
You did just fine.
Looks great! I normally put my graffiti on one side only also.
I agree with LM on toning down the trucks and wheels a little.
well, like they say, eventually you will find the exact same thing on the prototype. There's even a helix in Finland.
I really like how you made the rust bubbles in this picture:
Thanks for all the comments. Fair point about the wheels and trucks, next time ill try a more oily look.
I already have plans for my next box car, i think it will have a more faded look rather than rusty.
Noel.
That's better than a lot of others first attempts!!!
You only improve from here! Well Done!
Carmine, modeling the HO Scale Pacific Belt RR since 1975!
I also like the rust bubbles, how did you get that effect? I don't cover the reporting marks with the graffiti (you're close) because it makes identification harder if you're into operations. Most graffiti artists(?) don't either because that's the quickest way to get a RR to paint over it.

I used a small piece of sponge and dabbed the paint on. Dont use too much paint on the sponge keep it fairly dry.
Noel.
Impressive... keep up the good work. Excellent being your first go at weathering. Trucks do look alittle too bright tho. Like the others have said just tone that down alittle.
I like the. Graffiti ...
