Anyone have any experience with this unit? Seems like a fair compromise between the bachmann ez command and the zephyr.

It's expandable, and still has a bunch of features, and can be had for $110.00.
 
I run on Digitrax, NCE and MRC on a regular basis. All are good. IF the Express is expandible, I'd not hesitate to move on it. What I would do is check your upgrade path. See if down the road you pay more than the Zephyr or NCE PowerCab.
