MOW and other Vehicle Weathering

Sometimes things don’t work out. The gloss either was not mixed enough or it’s gone bad. Can that happen? I use a vortex mixer for 1 minute and the flip the bottom and do it again. Here’s the machine, next to the diet RootBeer

So I have 2 trucks suspended in 99% Isopropyl Alcohol hopefully getting stripped of the gloss

The above is before I decided they looked terrible and sent them for a bath

The plan is no weathering tonight or tomorrow, I need a break

they are ready for a small hydraulic leak and all wheels dirtied up. They will stay relatively clean. Not my thing, but…

These will be done today and tomorrow along with a few more MOW vehicles received from a neighbor that I found out this week he builds dioramas but not usually train related. He farms out all his painting. He builds some in 1/87th but mainly does 1/24th. He knocked on the door the other day. The LHS owner said I was on his street. He has a grain facility I am going to walk over in the snow this morning to see. It gets picked up tomorrow.

Hi there. These are the last 2 CN HiRailer MOW vehicles that I will be posting that are for sale. Finished these this morning even though they had been started 1/29/2023. Again, very lightly weathered as CN kept these vehicles pretty damn clean. The lift and the wheels are basically the only thing that that showed the wear of the elements. Mainly a black pin wash onto the panel lines.

Not exactly sure when these will head to Facebook. I have 4 more to do but those will be mine.

I have 10 pickups and 6 utility trucks with booms coming. Some with hirailers. They will be stripped of the CP markings and BNSF added and then weathered. I have a mix of CN trucks also arriving soon. The fun with doing the BNSF is they are not kept as clean as the CN vehicles are.

I have 3 FedEx tractors at the bench, it’s a WIP

This needs some more clean up around the panel lines but it’s close. I will be painting the mirrors to look like mirrors. The hood and roof top wind deflector are still too shiny and clean and will get some grime

Hello

A bit later then mid-June but we had fun while traveling. I got home and have had little to no enthusiasm for any modeling. Slowly I am getting back into it…

i started working on 7 trucks that had CP markings. Some 99% Isopropyl Alcohol and the decals and stripes are gone. This group will become UP. I thought the decal sheets I ordered had the correct UP shields for the door panels. They did not The decals should be here Tuesday. I am working on weathering 4 CP trucks and 8 CN trucks. Similar to my previous postings, light weathering with little to no rust.

Decision made. I will carefully strip off the door panels. While I dont 100% like this picture, it is real and looks ok. The dirt moves upward and when doing a model, that seems strange to me

It all depends no mud guards equals more splash but this is a vechicle on tracks maybe the track wheels transfer to the tyres which transfer to the bodywork or as US trains are large maybe they throw out from another track but the reference picture is proof of the pudding first class pudding btw

Excellent piece of work though I would stick with the reality because it is what it is and you have the pictures changing it to how people expect it is compromise and then the reference pictures screams w r o n g you don’t do wrong

The as-weatherd door and hood seams on the cab give the impression that the seams are a good 1” wide, or more. (Of course, the molded-in seams are incredibly oversized, making it difficult to highlight them in a way that comes across as in scale.)

Of what you’ve posted in this thread, I think your Jan 5, 7, 11 posts have the most proportionate seam highlighting.

It might be sufficient to only add enough highlighting to “hint” or “suggest” the seam is present. Could a lighter color or thinner wash in the seams help in this regard?

One other possibility suggested in some of your prototype photos is not always to highlight the seam directly, but have an abrupt, but subtle, change in soil level at the seam.

Thanks for the perspective.

The June 24th picture is the latest in the series of weathering these styles of trucks. Anything previously pictured have been sent off with approvals to clients. At this time I have no other trucks being weathered then this group of 7 that I can show. The 7 pictured of which 5 have been stripped of striping and RR markings are just dirty from the stripping process. I have to clean them, apply a gloss finish, add the RR identification decals ((UP for these stripped 5), add the striping, add the panel liner, clean the lines up and add a clear matte finish. Then weather.

I understand and see what you write about that the seams seem 1” wide. Some past trucks after being panel lined and cleaned up, still left what seemed like huge gaps and basically all were stripped off and started again. These particular 7 trucks are for 1 agreeable client that allows photos in process. The decals for the UP markings have not arrived yet.

I will show more photos of these 7 if the decals ever get here.

I am using the black Tamiya Panel liner and as noted I believe in this thread, (or the Locomotive Continuous thread) I have not been happy with it. In my experience the panel lines off the brush are just too thick and not consistent enough. I have a friend who uses the brown panel liner and it is as thin as can be. I do know from batch to batch on the River Point Station MOW vehicles the gaps are significant. I have on the past 3 locomotives just dripped a needle in the panel liner and it runs as it should, very tight. But those are on locomotives that seem to have stricter tolerances.

I am looking forward to how you like or not the finish on these 7 trucks. I use these threads hoping for another eye to point out the errors I miss and constructive criticism. Most of my pictured work are commission projects that are always approved by the client prior to shipping.

thanks
TomO

This maybe shouldn't go here, but seeing as it's a locomotive weathering thread thought it appropriate, move if need be.

Yes, I noticed that difference. People ask why I use photos? I use photos to control my urge to make everything a rust bucket. The contrast on the locomotives should be immediately noticed
I don't know if you can grab a still from that video, if you can, might be one you can add to your extensive library that I know you keep.

You’re talking about photos yet to come, right? I gather from the mentioned June 24 photos, that those had undergone only decal and stripe removal.
