Moving! Good news and bad news...

JazzDad you are correct. My spouse is thinking about moving closer to the grandkids (yeah I miss them also). I told her I am taking my trains, tools and underwear. Selling or throwing everything else away. Even selling the car.

Our move into the present home was a disaster that I won't repeat.

twforeman, best of luck with the move, congratulations on the new home.

Well it sounds like you are looking forward to the move and you have a plan. Congrats and good luck! From what I hear it's probably safe to get away from Minneapolis

Man I can attest to the fact that moving sucks....I have moved 17 times thus far and I am only 52. Sigh.....I know that I will move at least 2 more times. within the next 15 years. At this point I am good with it I think but the thought of moving now would really blow. I hope to move one more time and that's when I retire. Intended destination is Alabama....either south of Birmingham or at Guntersville. We will see. That's a ways off.....only good thing at the moment is I am single and have been for 12 years although I was dating a gal for 8 years off and on during that time which obviously didn't pan out.... So it's me, my trains, tools, other hobby toys and my 2 cats lol that's it!

Ponder this why is it called "retire" and not just "tire"?

Wow, That is a lot of moves, but I think moving more often might clear at least some of the rubble. This is only my 3rd move since "real" life began. In 1983 St. Louis (934 square foot house) to Denver (1500 SF), took only one 24 foot moving truck, and one other trip with pickup. 1992 from Denver to another place in the Denver metro area (3600 SF) took 4 trips with a 22 foot moving truck, Suburban w/trailer. Now 2021, almost 30 years of accumulation, Denver to Wichita this move has already been 16 trips with Suburban and 7x14 trailer (and escort pickups), This is after throwing away mountains of old paperwork, clothing, furniture..... Still think probably 3 trips left. And yes three of those trailers were just railroad related stuff (books, magazines, dining car china, schedules, a switch stand, etc.) and model railroad stuff.

Life just seems to accumulate - stuff. I am beginning to like the idea of a big bon-fire before the next move.

Yup moving does tend to make you re-evaluate what you have and what is important to keep and then what you purge. When I was in Florida I moved 5 times which is when I did my biggest purges and dumpster fires. I built my 1st true layout when I was in Arkansas. I cried as it was my 1st one lol and I had to tear it down. I didn't do a modular system and I wish I had. In Florida I just had the shelf layout so that wasn't to bad. Here in NY I did the semi-modular, I will be able to move it if I need to but this one is temporary anyhow until my garage expansion gets up and running. Maybe if I am lucky it will be within 2 years. I was set to build it before COVID hit and well that went out the window real fast. In the mean time I am good with my small layout. Being single I tend to keep things categorized and compartmentalized with my hobbies. So I pretty much know what I have and will sell if need be. Accumulation is a habitual thing I think. I will spend days, weeks or months on evaluating on certain items. I try very hard not to have to much "junk".

Iron Horseman: Actually moving to Doo-Dah or nearby? I live and work in the outskirts of Wichita, but not Wichita proper. We are slowly clearing out the junk we accumulated after only 7.5 years since the last move. I think we could get everything into a 900 Sq. Ft house, but I have only 4 more years left on the current one....

Clearwater specifically. I couldn't even fit into a 900 SF storage barn.

Habitual and just not having enough time to do the categorization / compartmentalizing thing. I have many things I've gotten multiple copies just because I forgot if I had or had not already ordered one. Surprise, I HAD already ordered it. One of my first great retirement plans is to flesh out my inventory spreadsheet to make it all inclusive.

Anyone need an HO Broadway Limited 4-6-2 Christmas Locomotive? The blue snowflake scheme. Brand new never out of box.

I'm in Augusta and work in Derby, so more of an east sider...lol

Clearwater is a nice town. Far enough away to avoid some of the crazies Wichita has, but close enough to be able to get things the smaller town can't support. Augusta used to be that way, but since Andover and Wichita city limits now meet there's less of a buffer.
