Who all aftermarket offers detail parts for engines, i know of details west & cannon off the top of my head are there any others that would be reccomended.

BMLA makes some really nice details, especially for N scale. And let's not forget Railflyer for our Canadian friends.

Mike, for the diesel era here's a pretty good list of manufacturers to look into.

Details West
Details Associates
BLMA
Tichy Trains
BLMA
A-Line
Cal Scale
Atlas-great parts supplier cheap
Cannon & Co.
Hi-Tech Diesels
MV Products
Smokey Valley
Utah Pacific
American Model Builders
Overland-if you can find them
Plano Model Products

That's pretty much everyone that I have parts from. The parts bins have a little bit of everything in them around here. LOL

HOLY HELL, alot more then i thought there was.

Jerome, who would ya say has the best prices on stuff. I seen some of the super detail kits from details west for say a sd40-2 which was basicaly grabs, lift hooks and i think a few small other parts was liek $14.00 buy you can get packs of a 100 grab irons for a few bucks ect.

What im wanting to do to most of the engines i have is mainly grab irons, mu hoses (is there a generic one i can use for everything diesel wise) horns, and the bar that goes across the front & rear above the couplers cant recall the name.

and do any of em make side truck frame detail kits that arent plastic?

It's all a matter of what the sale price is and cost of shipping. Sometimes retailers have specials, that's when I buy in bulk. Always a better deal to buy bulk packages I think. The smaller quantity packages cost you more and your always running out!! LOL

No generic kit like you described that I know of. I think you mean un-coupler bars. The 10 pack from Detail Associates is a good deal.

what do you mean by side frame detail kits??

oops i ment the truck details.

yeah for instance i got a Bowser 2-8-2 Pennsylvania L-1 Mikado I need the number plates for it. There is 3 in a pack which is like $2.50 but everyone wants $7.95-8.99 shipping.

So im trying to come up with an order thatll make it worth it. Only thing is i need the number plates now to get em to the guy thats redoing it for me.

Go with Jerome's suggestion about ordering some drop grabs, stirrup steps, lifting eyes, and MU cables in bulk to round out the order. They are good for almost any engine or freight car and I'm always running out of them (or they end up flying off into space :) ). I mention stirrup steps because they are the most common thing to break on Athearn BB kits. Replacing those thick plastic stirrup steps with nice thin metal ones is probably the single easiest way to make the BB cars look 100% better.

Athearn Genesis SD70 spare parts have unpainted ditch lights with bulbs in them. Some assembly required.

With other manufactureres, Details west has pre-drilled unpainted ditch light housings with lenses and bulbs.

There are also other manufacturers like Detail Associates and Details west that offer ditch light castings that need to be drilled out and painted before assembly.

Railflyer makes a nice set (molded with the hole in place) that requires assembly of the unpainted brass parts, but looks really nice. They're out of production (for now) but they look really nice.

No one really makes a plug and play set of ditch lights.

I figured I would have to add the lighting element to it, I was more so looking for who makes the housing ready to go. Seems pretty straight forward though. Anyone ever use a Cannon and Company hood kits fir both ends? The front seems pretty easy but the rear looks like some major cutting.
