Log-In Problem

Clicking on the log-in button today brings up the following error message:

"Oops! We ran into some problems.
Security error occurred. Please press back, refresh the page, and try again."

Pressing the "back" arrow does get me logged in, but this isn't how it's supposed to work.

Is there a gobblin in the system or....?

I've had one other member report this, right after we migrated. It may be related to your browser cache. I've not been able to track anything definite down on this one yet.

Thanks, Bob. I've cleared my cache a few times since the migration to the new site, yet today is the first time I've experienced this problem. I'll clear it again and get back to you. Other possibilities?

I had to sign in my Password 3 times before I got on just now. The 3rd time I put a capital letter at the beginning of the PW & it went right thru.

I'll keep watching for this.

Larry, passwords are case sensitive, so it shouldn't have needed one unless it had it originally. Not sure though.

This message also still comes up with me as well from time to time when clicking on the Alerts. Haven't seen it when logging in as yet.

I eventually had to clear my history in order to log-in again. I even got the same error message (when logged in) trying to reply to Bob's note. The site's definitely infected with something unfriendly.

The site is not "infected". That's not just my opinion. I use Sucuri.net website security systems to provide 24/7 monitoring of the website for any infections, viruses or malware. They have not detected any issues. We are also using the most current version of the forum software, release about 2 weeks ago.

It is possible there is a bug that's causing the issue you're seeing. The software is complex and has to work with many operating systems and browsers. So there could be something odd going on, but I'm confident it's not an infection.

So why isn't this site https? Well, there are a couple of reasons, including cost, but the biggest reason is that if we do move to https, you'll see more "security errors", not less. Things like images from other websites that aren't using https and are embedded in messages here would trigger a warning that not all of the elements on the page are secure. Most folks wouldn't understand why, and the warning would cause them undue concern.

Also, let's think about WHY you should use https. Https provides a secure protocol for transmission of confidential data like credit card info, home address, employment info etc. We don't ask for any of that! You're asked for your user name and password. That's it. Since there is no "sensitive information" being submitted, adding additional complexity to an already complex system won't accomplish anything useful while possibly causing more problems.

It is something I'm exploring. At some point we may switch. But for now, I don't have any immediate plans to add it.

No log in problem here, but rather strange I did not receive a notification in my email that new postings had been made to a subject I started??

PS: I'm not worried about security on this model rr site. We have MUCH GREATER problems with security within our USA government with this current admin,...unbelievable !!

BTW, did spell check disappear??

I haven't had any problems logging onto this new site, or the old one except for that google thing a couple of months ago. I was not concerned about this sit not being an "https" site, just pointing out that it may be a problem with some browsers.
Spell check is part of your system, not part of a website.

Well, the security thing is a bit of a touchy subject, as the old software was kicking off alerts from time to time and even got the site blacklisted on occasion. I have probably spent at least $1,000.00 addressing that problem, subscribing to Sucuri, moving to a new server, and paying for two servers for a month during the transition etc. So I'm very careful about it and have taken drastic steps to ensure the site is secure. And, no, the ad revenue isn't nearly enough to cover the entire cost. At the moment it's not even covering the monthly server fee, though with traffic improvements on the new website, it's slowly climbing and I'm hopeful that some day my day to day costs will be covered.

As for the https, it is something I have explored. The new server is capable of it. I would have to purchase a certificate and have it installed, and I had originally planned to do that. However, I found out that there would be warning generated from content linked from other sites, which would imply that the site isn't secure. Since the whole reason to get it was to provide an assurance the site IS secure, it would essentially defeat the purpose and possibly make things appear worse. I will continue to monitor the situation with this forum software and I do expect that at some point we will implement it. But for now, I'm going to let things stay as they are for a while, and make sure we have everything running as smoothly as possible before I introduce any additional complexities.

Yes, spell check is part of your browser. It sounds like the old software may have done some as well, I'm not sure. The new software does not, but that's due to the fact that most web browsers have it built in. I'm using Chrome for example, and it highlights the many spelling errors I make as I type. So if you're having problems, check your web browser documentation.
