Although I've been into model trains ever since I was a young boy, in both HO and N scale, I got a late start in life with 3-rail O-gauge trains. And while originally attracted to the full 1/48 scale size, the past handful of years have found me becoming more enamored with the slightly smaller, 'Traditional'-sized O-gauge trains. Traditional-size trains tend to measure in at roughly around 1/53 scale or so, which is a bit smaller than 1/48th. Mostly I have Lionel, but I do have small amounts of other brands, like MTH, K-Line, Atlas, and even a few others too.
One of the major attractions of traditional-size equipment for me, is the fact that a lot these are currently available dirt cheap in the second-hand market if one shops around, both on-line or model train shows or even hobby shops that sell used trains. A lot of my traditional-sized freight cars were manufactured in the 1970's, 1980's, and 1990's, with a little postwar-era mixed in for good luck.
Admittedly, I could easily afford an expensive 1/48th scale Vision Line Big Boy, but I'm far too cheap to lay out that kind of cash!

I'd be just as happy with a traditional-sized Big Boy, and size-wise it would fit in just right with my current collection of traditional-sized freight cars.
I dunno, although I'm not a big U.P. fan, I just might have to consider getting a traditional-sized Big Boy one of these days.
